We loved it here, so tranquil and relaxing. Lovely surrounding villages, churches and restaurants. Popped over to Maggiore one morning, had a coffee and then hurried back to Orta again!

If you stay in Orta more than one day, a trip to Pella is a nice option. The ride across gives a very different view of the lake with the mountains to the north in sharp relief. The waterfront in Pella is a lovely and very quiet alternative to Piazza Motta. There are several places to eat along the water.... More

This is the Waitrose of the lakes (Lake Maggiore is more Sainsburys!). Very beautiful, small, with one island where the frescos are worth a visit. Unfortunately, most of the lake front is privately owned so you have to use a pay beach, search hard for a bit of access or rent accommodation on the lake side. It is worth it... More

Much smaller than its neighbour Lago Maggiore it is never the less a beautiful lake and very quiet at this time of the year. Easy to drive round we took 4 hours with lots of stops in lakeside villages.

We were impressed with Lake Orta/ San Guilio due to its history and impeccable zoning. This is quintessential Italy, with cobblestoned pedestrian walkways between piazzas. A stone walkway extends around nearly the entire island, so we were able to see the villas and different views under shade trees as we walked.

We have visited some of the larger lakes this is one was our favorite. The charm of the lake and the surrounding town was so worth the a bit out of the way trip. The lake and the town become more magical at night. Take a ride to the island.

Have lunch by the quay. Go over to the island. Have a peaceful day. Not sure there's much for the kids to do ...

I have lived in Italy for 11 years, owning the award winning Bed and Breakfast, La Casa del Giardiniere, near Stresa. Whenever asked by guests for recommendations of where to visit, Lake Orta and the town of Orta San Giulio is always at the top of my suggestions list. It has a wonderful unique charm and a very special romantic... More

We got married in Orta San Giulio in August and I think we picked the most beautiful town in the World. Orta is breathtakingly beautiful, with its cobbled streets and beautiful piazza there is no where better to forget about the rest of the world and enjoy the afternoon drinking spritz and eating pizza. Our wedding was in the town... More
