Palace of the Visconti family, the castle was place of the Battle of Pavia in which event Francis l of France was defeated by the Spaniards. Part of the walls in the rear shows destructive pattern caused by the Spaniard artillery.

Our guide only made a superficial tour of the place. Big in scope , a courtyard , a museum which we never got to enter , and lots of history related to the city behind it.

You cross the moat by what used to be a drawbridge into this handsome brick colonnaded building and we were admitted without charge being over 60. There are roughly four permanent exhibitions: Roman antiquities, replicas of Roman and Greek sculpture, a floor of paintings mainly 19th century local artists and a via a walk under the roof, spectacular in itself, a special exhibition of paintings and sculpture from a collection made over a lifetime by a local couple - very interesting. Well worth a visit not least for the magnificence of the castle, but don’t expect tea rooms or a shop although some postcards are on sale.

We found this place by chance stopping by in Pavia for the afternoon.
My gf and I both love old buildings, ancient structures, traces of former civilizations.
So naturally we saw this in the town centre, and had to go explore.
It's worth going on a Sunday, it will be free of charge.
The strcutre is quite large, with a spacious courtyard inside.
You go go up, and walk around the corridors overlooking the centre courtyard.
Quite well preserved and a refreshing to swan around.

There are also museums which you can pay to access.

The day we visited, the outside grounds beynd the old mote that used to surround and protect the castle, people are enacting old ways of life, and putting on shows of various kinds, demonstrating way of life back in midieval times.

I understand it is a yearly occurrence (so aim for the 19th May of you can).

Ancient castle with a museum, and where several events can take place. We were there for a gala dinner, and the environment was delicious.
