The Catholic church of San Francesco Grande wasl built in the 13th century, at the NE-side of of the historical block of the University. The structure of the church has three naves. Inside there is a front part characterized by a trussed roof on round arches and a back part with a sometimes white and red ribbed roof on pointed arches. The marble altar is from 1777 and houses a valuable Madonna attributed to the baroque painter Bernardino Ciceri. The altar is enriched by the precious wooden choir created in the second half of the fifteenth century by the Donati brothers. The church also preserves a large altarpiece by Vincenzo Campi (1588) depicting St. Matthew, whose realism was read by critics as an important precedent for Caravaggio's painting. Worth a visit, admission is free.

This is a pretty neighborhood church with a very nice interior, especially the dome and several of the side chapels. It is in the university area, and worth a quick look.
