About

The Charterhouse was founded by notarial deed on September 19th, 1349 by Giovanni Visconti, archbishop and lord of Milan, who donated it to the Carthusian order, together with other personal belongings. Petrarca's account is what is left of the primary Charterhouse. In 1388 Giovanni's nephew, Luchino Novello Visconti, regarded as the second founder, donated, on his death, all his belongings to the Carthusian monks. In the XVth century the Charterhouse look was completely modified.

A moving experience

I walk past this church three times a week, but never venture past the imposing frontage. Last week, however, following the loss of a dear friend, I decided to spend a few minutes in quiet contemplation, and pray for her. As I walked into the church, for the first time, I was stunned by the beauty that beheld me. The frescos, the sheer immensity of the church, and the solitude. Whether it is for quiet prayer, or to marvel at the artwork, this is a church not to be ignored.

How can you miss this?

OK, it's a long way to get to the Certosa. 1 hour on the metro, tram and walking. But it's worth every step. This is not on the usual tourist sites but it is amazing. I was the only one in the building when I arrived, beside the three Italy Touring Club volunteers who help with this place (and others). Just look at the photos. Did you think the Duomo was all Milan had to offer?

An amazing abbey under the ring road

When it was founded, in 1349, it was 4 km outside from Milan, surrounded by the fields. Now it's in the town, in the suburbs, close to the highway entrance, where you'll never bet to find such an amazong treasure.
From the city centre, take the tram n. 14 (in Via Torino) to reach the Certosa. The journey will be quite long: be patient, take a look of town and get off nearly at the terminus. You'll be surprized to discover the abbey: it's big, so many frescos, so many colours. You'll delightded and you'll surely appreciate also the peaceful atmosphere of the district around the Church.
Then, you could take a walk to Certosa rail station and get the train to reach the Expo, it's a few minutes!

BEAUTIFUL INTERIOR

This church/monastery is outside of the city centre and requires a bus journey of around 15 minutes. Unfortunately the monastery part of the building was not open but the journey was worthwhile as the exterior of the church had wonderful domes, steeples and pillars which were charming. The inside is breathtaking with murals all over the walls and ceiling along with a magnificent alter.

Amazing place rarely open

This place is so nice and has beautiful architecture but it is rarely open. If it is closed you can only see it from the street. I was there on thursday. It is very close to the centro storico and it is not crowded.

Hello Tijana, in August the Charterhouse of Milan can be closed because there are few people to oversee the church treasures. an early baroque fresco painting exhibition

this late renaissance church, once the centre of an important chartreuse, is totally decorated inside with an extremely well preserved cycle of frescos authored by the most important lombard painters from the beginning of XVII century
the colours are still very bright, and the stories well enjoyable
it is definitely one of the art highpoints in towen

impressive, hidden monastry

Peacefull silence and beautiful artwork in this authentic monastry. Paintings, tiled floors, woodcarvings. Everytime you take a look you will see some new details. A hidden pearl outside the busy city of Milan.

A jewel in the suburbs

Unfortunately it is little visited by tourists, perhaps also because it is not located in the city centre. The frescoes dedicated to S. Bruno make it clear why it is also known as the Sistine Chapel in Milan. A true gem that deserves more fame
