About
Why visit a cemetery when you’re on vacation, you ask? The tombs at this Milan burial ground offer a great glimpse of Italian artistic styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It is huge and the variety, style and size of the gravestones and monuments is awe inspiring. There are number by famous Spanish artists and others that just have to be seen to be appreciated.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 21, 2023

Perfect for an early morning walk before going back into the city centre before breakfast.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 18, 2024
- JMEdQEdinburgh, United Kingdom341 contributionsWhat an amazing place!A one-off experience by any standards. This is a vast area of tombstones and monuments to the 'great-and-good' of Milan over the years. An astonishing assemblage of eclectic and extraordinary small buildings and more modest tombs. Some of them are beautiful, others are weird. Not the most comfortable place to visit, perhaps, but definitely one to see.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 11, 2024
- soinic2,974 contributionsMonumentale! 🌞This cemetry is now my favorite one (before Milano it was Père-Lachaise in Paris). You can discover plenty of outstanding art and really extraordinary graves. It is a quiet, peaceful, contemplative ... oasis in beautiful Milan. At the entrance (no fee) you can discover a plan with the most interesting graves. Special mention to the "Campari family" grave. Impressing and touching. Discover it at your ease as we did, without guided tour, would be my advice. Plan plenty of time.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 26, 2024
- rachel mWaringstown, United Kingdom576 contributionsWow! Amazing art and cemeteryYou could honestly spend a full day here. I've always loved walking around cemeteries and looking at the history as well as thinking about people's stories but here takes it to a whole new level. The burial plots are so artistic. The photos adding to the story. Amazing place and not to be missed if in Milan.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 27, 2024
- CaitlinWishesAberdeen, United Kingdom12 contributionsA place of peace and artI would recommend anyone who is in milan visit this lovely peaceful place where art and life (and death) are at the forefront of each thoughtful design. You can spend as much time as you like wandering the grounds and taking in each burial site as every one is truly a work of art and should be appreciated as such. From smaller headstones to tombs and large mausoleums they are all given the same care and attention in their design. While it was opened in 1866 there are several modern designs and family's are still seen tending to the sites.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2024

The main entrance is though the large Famedio, a massive hall of fame like Neo medieval style building made of marble and stone that contains the tombs of some of the city's and country's most honored citizens. There is a special section for those who do not belong to the catholic religion and a Jewish section. There is also the Crematorium Temple , which was the first crematorium to open in the western world. Signals located throughout the cemetery point visitors to several of the most remarkable tombs and monuments.

The cemetery is not on every itinerary for Milan that I consulted but I was intrigued by the idea of a city for the dead and gave it a go. And it wasn't disappointing. The art and design is amazing and the whole place is so unusual in celebrating the dead like that. Really recommend it if you've got time.

I have traveled all the way to Milan for this cemetery! It is beautiful & there is a new surprise around every corner. Quiet & peaceful with wonderful photographic opportunities. However, the day I had set aside for the visit it closed at 1pm! (there were a group of disgruntled tourists who had taken the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus to get there who were very disappointed). I had to go back another day.

I toured the cemetery a few days before Halloween on an afternoon with light rain, so the ambience was perfect. I the day I was there, I saw almost no tourists, a nice break from busy Milan. The sheer size and variety of structures were very impressive, and interesting---just wish I had a guide to tell me the history of some of the monuments, Well worth an hour or two.

This was probably our biggest surprise on the trip to Milan, and how beautiful and artistic all of the grave sites outside were. The indoor halls were very unique and different to anything we have in the USA. I agree with other travelers that this is a mus-see when in Milan, even though it seems something odd for a vacation. Very peaceful, but can be hot too so bring water.

Few cities can afford to consider a large cemetery as a work of art. Milan, however, with its Monumental Cemetery, allows the visitor to immerse themselves in an original reality, making it architecturally impeccable and admirable. Cimitero Monumentale can be easily reached by public transport,

You respectfully enter an open-air museum, in the peace of the necropolis, surrounded by art in silence. Collect the map at the entrance: a couple of routes are recommended. A short one of half an hour and a longer one of an hour and a quarter. I recommend this because it allows you to visit the main tombs and their sculptures. One would want to stop often to read the inscriptions, to observe the sculpted human figures.

The Monumental Cemetery in Milan is a must see in my opinion. If time allowed I could have easily spent a whole day wandering around, taking photos and appreciating the details of the monuments and nearly lifelike statues, there are some very moving graves. A cemetery for the rich, you will not find your average headstone here.

Yes, there are incredible buildings and mausoleums and those alone would make a trip to the Cimiterio Monumentale worth the effort. Incredible structures and so many of them.
But what really captured my attention were the incredible sculptures of people on top of many of the graves closer to the ground and in the headstones. This was more like visiting a world-class sculpture garden than it was a cemetery. Can easily spend a few hours walking around and admiring the "art."
Easy to get to and very close to Milan's Chinatown, where the art of ravioli becomes the art of dumplings. So walk around the cemetery,, see great art, and build up an appetite! You won't regret the decision to spend time here.

Cordialement
Elodie

Yes, but you shall carry it with you all the time, it happened to me once, because there are no storage places.
By the way, if you need a place to store your luggage near the central station, I just bumped into one today, a few steps from the station. Luggage Storage Via Pergolesi 22

e' possibile avere una mappa se si entra da soli??

Io la mappa l'ho avuta dal punto informazioni all'ingresso. E' utile averla perché molti luoghi possono sfuggire andando a caso e l'area è molto vasta.

Hello, I'm going to visit Milan soon and I would like to ask you, if this is the cemetery where is buried Umberto Eco?
Thanks for your answers!
Written January 2, 2017
Buongiorno,
