About
The centerpiece of Milan, the Duomo is one of Europe’s greatest architectural and cultural landmarks. As Italy’s largest church and one of the largest in the world, it took over 600 years to build. Today, the Duomo has a capacity of 40,000 people and is home to the world’s second-largest organ. Admire the wide selection of religious art on display inside, or marvel at the 3000 statues that line its Gothic exterior. Be sure to join one of the available Duomo tours, which include art tours and even rooftop tours, where you might be able to see as far as the Italian Alps. – Tripadvisor

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

- Rick VSan Diego, California58 contributionsDuomo de Milano is an overwhelming experience! The Milano Duomo is so impressive. Its exterior hosts an endless display of sculptures, artisan designs and skilled sculpting. The walking the terraces is a great option. One can see the craftsmen’s work close up. The beautiful details are inspiring. This duomo’s size is staggering = 109,641 sq ft interior and 184,000 sq ft exterior. It is 108m high and 157m long. Its capicity is 40,000 people The Milano Duomo’s interior continues to impress visitors. There is an abundance of unique and large stained glass windows. The fluted columns are 3.5m wide and 33m high. Vestibules cannot be missed. The large pipes of the pipe organs are art in its own realm. The Milano Duomo is world famous for its size and beauty.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2023
- Elizabeth S2 contributionsA must see!We did the Fast track private tour Cathedral, Archaeological area and Rooftops of the Milan Duomo. The site is magnificent and to be seen. Having a guide assisted in fully appreciating the beauty we were seeing. While awe-inspiring in its own right, the tour really enhances the appreciation of this site.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 6, 2023

All of the architecture is so amazing! Lines get really long, so I suggest getting there early or doing a tour like I did, that includes The last supper as well. Definitely go up to the balcony side where you can see more of the architecture up close which is a little bit more Gothic. Anytime I’m in Milan, I’m going to make sure I stop here again.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten October 8, 2023

She was impressively knowledgeable, able communicate well, opinionated (in a good way), and informative. - Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom937 contributionsOne of the cathedrals of the world - go and seeAs one of the largest churches in the world this is a stunning location. The interiors are gorgeous and there are lots of lovely statues and chapels. You can walk up the stairs to get to the roof and walk all around the top of the duomo. This gives you great views of the city and the only issue was the queue to get down off the roof.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023

- Mark QSan Antonio, Texas56 contributionsAwesome Architecture and Statues GaloreAwesome architecture and the statuary is all master’s level and plentiful. Took the rooftop tour even though I have a very healthy respect for heights. Worth the climb. Yes but the granite and marble spiral staircase was a treat unto itself. If in Milano this is a must stop.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023
- IrishTraveller0Dublin, Ireland156 contributionsRooftop is worth the moneyThe rooftop walk is great, use the fast track lift as you first come out a quiet part of the roof so great for photos and taking it all in. Great experience and views. The climb down is by stairs but is surprisingly quick and not steep. Cathedral is good but audio guide needed, the app is not great.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 2, 2023
- Aero3926364 contributionsGo to the topSpend the money to go to the roof. It's really lovely up there, and you get to see all the decorative bits at closer range. Note that if you purchase the elevator ride, it only takes you UP. You still need to take stairs back down. The staff was lovely and helpful both at the Duomo itself and at the Museum. If you only have time to do the roof or the museum, I would select the roof, but the museum has some interesting pieces including a wooden model of the Duomo.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- swoodrufMuskegon, Michigan1,638 contributionsMassive Cathedral ... Milan's DuomoThis cathedral may not be the most beautiful one I've seen (although it IS gorgeous), but it is definitely the most massive. The columns of marble are gigantic; it is absolutely amazing to me how these buildings were erected in the middle ages. I've always been fascinated with Ken Follett's book, Pillars of the Earth. Whenever I enter a gothic cathedral, I can't help but think of times long past. The opulence and wealth of the church cannot be denied.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 5, 2023

The Duomo is of course the most famous building in Milan. It is very impressive and the details on the outside are amazing. You can't help but stop and stare at it when you see it. In order to visit the Duomo I would recommend the combination ticket for 17 Euros which grants you access to the inside as well as the rooftops. You can opt to take the stairs or the lift to the roof for an extra 4 Euros. I actually found the rooftop to be more interesting than the inside. The views were nice from the top and it felt like a more unique experience. You can also book the tickets in advance, especially during busy tourist seasons to avoid the otherwise very long lines.

We had an amazing time visiting the Duomo. We went around 9:30am on a Sunday. It wasn’t crowded at all. We bought tickets online that included the Duomo, archeological area, the crypt, lift ride to the roof top, and to the duomo museum (17€ per person, discounts for kids). The lift to the roof top was worth it. The views were amazing. We had to come bCk around 12noon to do the lift because the roof was closed for morning frost. Once we came back, there was a small line. We only waiting like 20 mins.

We were not let down by the wonderful cathedral, vault areas and the majestic rooftops.
You really wouldn't want to miss this.
Sadly the queuing system needs overhauled - queue to get into the ticket office to be given a ticket to wait on our number being called (after 40 minutes it wasnt - use the machine)
The queues are not managed so there's about a 20 minute bottleneck to get off the roof (non peak February visit). There ARE security staff with radios so would be better if they managed this.

This was the major reason that we flew into Milan. We love gothic churches and was on our bucket list of places to visit. The piazza in from of the church is spectacular and incredibly large. Since we were there off season, while it was still fairly crowded it was not difficult to maneuver. The interior is amazing and the number of photos we took were off the chart. The real joy was the roof. I would highly recommend buying your tickets ahead of time to avoid the queue to get them if you want to ride the elevator which is located in the back off the church. You can certainly walk up the hundreds of stairs but that queue was quick long and with a limited time in Milan, we just wanted to get up top and enjoy the view. It was not cheap but for us well worth the price especially in the time o COVID an no one wearing a mask. You could easily tell when you got to the top who rode the elevator and those who were huffing and puffing trying to catch their breathe when they got to the top. There is no way to wear a mask going up those stairs so it would just take one person to potentially cause an issue. You have an unlimited amount of time to walk around the roof and get a 360 degree view of Milan. There are numerous staff members up top to make sure people do not sit on the walls to take selfies though we saw at least one person being yelled at for ignoring the signs. Regardless of how you came up, you walked down into the church which was no big deal since gravity is in your favor. Would highly recommend visiting and taking your time. Enjoy.

The must see sight in Milan. I booked tickets online the day before and selected the 9.30 time slot (9am was the earliest). I arrived at 9.20 there was no queue and they let me straight in. If you are able to get there first thing before the crowds arrive then there’s no need for a fast track or beat the line ticket.
It is worth noting the entrance to the roof is not via the cathedral, there is a separate entrance around the side. I had intended to go to the roof first before it got too hot (38 degrees forecast!) but entered the cathedral and then found out about the separate entrance. As a result I rushed the cathedral a bit, but in the end it turned out the exit from the roof was into the cathedral which gave me a second chance to explore.
The roof is amazing and a must do, you really appreciate the majesty of it the sculpture from up close. I took the stairs and it wasn’t too bad a climb. The steps are wide and open so is easier to walk up than other churches I have experienced. I was a little out of puff by the top but only a little, anyone with a basic level of fitness should be able to manage it.
The inside of the cathedral itself was impressive but not standout in my opinion. It probably would be more meaningful to people of faith who would probably have been able to identify the saints/disciples in the various sculptures and the biblical scenes in the stained glass windows.
The archaeological site was interesting but a little hard to understand as most of the information was in Italian.
The ticket also includes entry to the Duomo Museum which is mostly sculptures, essentially the practice models for the cathedral. It was interesting enough to wander through but I was glad I hadn’t paid separately for it. What was more impressive was the free art exhibitions in the same building, the former royal palace. The palace has seen better days (crumbling plaster work) but there was something quite charming about a crumbling palace being used to display art. There were hardly any people in the exhibits, they weren’t well signposted. I recommend taking a look at what’s on once you’ve finished with the Duomo, the exhibits I went to were on the first hall.

One of the most impressive churches in the world. There are 38,000 statues, a tour of roof top views, a sun-dial, a nail from the Cross stored in a cross in the ceiling taken down fir 3 days of viewing a year, and archeological ruins of the baptism font & church that pre-dated this massive marble beauty. It takes $30M to maintain with replacement or rehabilitation of the marble each year. There is simply no way to take it all in, but a local guide will show highlights and point out unique sculpture. The St. Bartholomew statue inside depicting the martyr skinned alive, the 1930’s additions including boxing sculptures, frogs, sun & moon and so much more are part of this unique tour.

I visited the Duomo cathedral last saturday with an expert guide! Amazing! Actually we took a walking tour by CGM and the guide was just fabulous, showing us around and telling us about history and the meticolous art of sculpting all the artists followed to create all those statues...We certainly recommend this tour, thank you Samantha. One of the largest churches in Italy and therefore the world! Ornate gothic exterior, huge interior with beautiful stained glass. Even to just enter the church you have to buy a ticket from the office down the street to the right of the cathedral (as you face the facade) - it is just a few Euros to walk around the church, more if you want to visit the crypt or take the stairs (or lift) up to the roof. I just enjoyed the interior of the church.

Like many Duomo's in Italy, you can pay extra to climb the Duomo. In Milan, you climb the stairs to exit on the roof top. The roof top is sloped but manageable and the views are great. You are up close with the building itself and see the intricate stonework and ongoing repairs that are quite wonderful. If you are there in winter, choose an afternoon timeslot to make sure the sun is up and ice has melted. If the roof has ice on it, they close the climb for safety reasons.
Inside the Duomo, explore around. Definitely queue up and pay the extra Euro to walk behind the altar. There is a jewelled surprise there for you.

You might have seen the cathedrals in Florence or Sienna and think that one more Duomo is not worth the trouble. Think again. Each one of these three cathedrals is quite different and all are totally breathtaking. The Duomo in Milan is huge and had amazing sculptures around the roof that you can get to see close up by climbing the stairs or taking an elevator. That plus the view of the city are amazing. At the opposite pole, there is an archeological dig accessible by a small door and staircase at the back of the Duomo near the exit door that is not to be mssed. There you will see parts of the early churches that preceded this present building which itself was started over a thousand years ago. Buy yout ticks at a nearby ticket office on the left as you face the Duomo and on the way there are toilets. There are inside the Duomo. On your way to the Duomo walk through the giant covered shopping mall and enjoy the beautiful stores and their amazing clothes. At the opposite end of the shopping mall to the Duomo is the Teatro Alla Scala, Italy's leading opera house. Tickets are 20% off within one hour of the start of the performance. Have fun.

Prima di procedere all'
- durata complessiva e orientativa della visita;
- vorremo salire nelle terrazze e vorremo capire come è il percorso delle scale ( ripidità delle scale, se è al chiuso e nel caso se gli spazi sono particolarmente stretti) ovvero a chi è eventualmente sconsigliato;

Anyone who has been to the duomo terraces ( albeit in the elevator to go up) and as I understand there are only stairs to come down, would you attempt the terraces with a toddler or shall I skip it and just buy tickets for going inside the duomo.
Toddlers don't walk too much and might asked to be carried

Hi, there are only narrow stairs to come off the roof terrace.

Website says ticket is good for 3 days from date chosen. What does that mean? Can I use the ticket multiple times the same day? And on different days?
Fx visit the rooftop the first day, go to a restaurant for lunch, come back and visit the Duomo later the same day, and come back the next day to see the museum and the adjacent church/clocktower?
Written February 5, 2024
They answered this, and other questions asked here:
Duomo Terraces Museum (Lift or stairs), Culture Pass, Culture Pass Plus, Duomo+Museum and Duomo +Ambrosiana tickets are valid 3 days from the date picked, with one entrance per each site within the opening hours. For Duomo Terraces Museum (Lift or stairs) and Duomo+Ambrosiana tickets the selected time slot refers to the entrance to the Duomo Terraces, from which it is then possible to descend directly inside the Cathedral via stairs.
The entrance time selected for the visit is purely indicative and not restrictive.
