The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

Built at the end of the sixteenth century, the church of San Fedele, or of the Jesuits, overlooks the quiet square of the same name in the center of Milan. The interior of the church has a single nave with side chapels in which several interesting altarpieces are kept, such as the Vision of Saint Ignatius, a valuable Deposition of Christ and the fresco of the Madonna del Latte, much venerated by the artists of the nearby Teatro alla Stairs. Another element to observe are the masterfully carved confessionals. San Fedele is also famous for being the church usually frequented by Alessandro Manzoni, who fell down the stairs of this church and suffered injuries which within a few months led to his death. A monument dedicated to the famous writer is visible right in front of the facade.

I visited this 16th century Jesuit church between the Duomo and the Scala theatre and after the vastness of the Duomo, I just  loved its intimacy and the ease with which I could take in all it's charms.it's solemn, it's harmonious, and the carved walnut confessionals and sacristy walls are rich and sumptuous.

I wasn't expecting to find a museum tour inside the church, let alone a fluent English speaking guide, so that was a nice surprise : there are works of contemporary art, one of my favourites  being Lucio Fontana’s Sacred Heart, and works of  ancient art, all in a religious context.I've never seen choir stalls as lovely as the inlaid ones here .There is a wonderful  tribute to the dancers of la Scala in the " chapel of ballet dancers " created by the artist Mimmo Paladino but I don't want to spoil the surprise!

You must make time to visit this church beside Piazza Della Scala and also near Duomo.
It is a fine example of the architecture of Counter Reformation. You will be surprised to find a collection of both ancient and contemporary art. The fabulous wooden confessionals and huge carved wooden cabinets in the sacristy are a sight to behold. A must see is the 'Chapel of the Dancers' with an installation by Mimmo Paladino, the ballet dancers from La Scala used to visit the chapel before performances. There is plenty more to see -- you will just have to visit to find out. Thank you to the fantastic Francesco for the guided tour - in perfect English.

Relics are objects, usually part of the body or clothes, remaining as a memorial of a departed saint and their veneration is associated with many other religious systems besides Christianity.

What a surprise to stumble across this small church as we walked around Milan , and discover on a tour that it preserves and displays an amazing collection of tiny  relics dating from the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Another room holds lots of ancient liturgical objects such as crucifixes and other reliquaries. Ancient objects are juxtaposed with striking contemporary pieces and the one that stood out for me was a 45cm wire Crown of Thorns specially designed for the church altar by Claudio Parmiggiani.

Our guides English was easy for us to understand (he lived in Ireland I think ) and as he clearly has a passion for Italian history and religion, he made our short tour such an enlightening one ensuring it was one of the unexpected highlights of our weekend trip to Milan.

A humble church situated in a quiet piazza. This is a typical counter-reformation church. There are three interesting paintings by the altars. The confessionals are beautifully crafted too.

We just entered a church that looked nice, I think churches should be open, and it was. Good. The interior: brilliant. Beautiful. Warm. You felt welcome. A very nice surprise, 300 meters from the (of course brilliant too) Duomo, a completely different but equally 5 star Chiesa.

During my recent trip to Milano I had the pleasure of visiting the church of San Fedele. The square facing the church is simply beautiful and the perfect spot if you need to get away from the crowded 'Galleria.'
The façade of the church made of Angera stone is astonishing. The rose varieties of the stone give the church a bright and airy feel which is in deep contrast with the interior solemn carvings of the wooden confessionals and the sacristy - definitely my favorite section of the church along with the ‘Sacro Cuore’ by Lucio Fontana. The Sacred Heart is one of the various contemporary elements skillfully incorporated into the core of this 16th-century Jesuit church. Another one is the vibrant dome painted by Nicola De Maria.
My guide was fun, very knowledgeable, and a great storyteller. I particularly enjoyed the tale about the ballerinas of la Scala and their faithful journey to the chapel before each performance. There, you will also find an unexpected tribute to the dancers created by Mimmo Paladino - fascinating story.

We stumbled upon this lovely church whilst walking around town. It seemed closed as there were only people sitting on the steps but no one going in or out. Walking in you are greeted with the sheer size, on par with many of the churches we saw in Rome.

There are fantastic fescos and timberwork and it is the only church we've seen that incorporates ancient and modern artworks.

We paid the extra €2 to take the guided tour through the church, well worth it! I didn't catch our guides name but she spoke great English and was very knowledgeable about the church and the history. Be aware the tours stop running at 6pm.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area!

The elegant church of San Fedele stands right in the heart of Milan, just opposite the famous La Scala and next to Palazzo Marino , home of the city’s municipal administration. It’s the Jesuits’ church in Milan and offers a chance for a short artistic tour to its museum and crypt. Most of all, worth visiting is the lovely Ballerinas’ Chapel with its moving history: when the opera La Scala was built in the site of the former Church Santa Maria alla Scala, the painting of Madonna con Bambino was moved to the Church of San Fedele. Ever since, all famous ballerinas from the Opera house would go to San Fedele in order to pray in front of the painting and so the chapel was named in honor of them. A beautiful detail is the silver casts of pointe shoes on the walls. Finally, the crypt houses some pieces of medieval as well as modern art.

There are so many, many amazing churches to see in Milan (and all over Italy) that you can almost get overwhelmed. Yet this is yet another of the breath taking free churches almost better than any art gallery. A must see for sure.
