This tower is different to many of the other clock towers in the Emilia Romagna region because it has a number of extra features. There is a cover above the clock face to shield it from the sun and the weather. There is also a statue in a niche below the clock and further down a small balcony. Worth seeing.

This astronomical clock tells more than the time of day. It also displays the phases of the moon, the location of the planets, and charts the path of the sun through the Signs of the Zodiac.

It was designed by a mathematician in 1473. Pretty impressive considering the number of calculations that had to be done by hand.

The clock tower has seen better days but at it's peak it had a wide variety of functions. You can't miss it next to the round church.

Built in the fifteenth century onto the even older Raggione palace, the horological tower is the citys main clock tower. The mechanism is unusual by modern standards in that not only does it display the time of day, but also the phase of the moon and the section of the zodiac. When it was built, these greatly influence the supertitious beliefs of the residents, as is explained in the musuem, so were considered useful information in planning their daily routines.
We were fortune to be climbing back down the tower when the ancient clock mechanism, of which you can see all the cogs and gears and workings, was chiming the hour. What was normally a gently ticking mechanism suddenly whirred into action, with certain parts of it swinging round rapidly.
Though most of this attraction can be seen in around half an hour, it is certainly worth visiting for the view and the history, especially if you have bought the Mantua card which allows access at no further cost.

Located on the main square of Mantua. If you climb you will be rewarded with a nice view over the city.

This is a small place on the main square in Mantua but is worth visiting. The climb to the top of the tower gives you a fabulous view out over the city. There is also a small art exhibition that hosts temporary exhibitions. The one on when we visited was really interesting, mostly modern and contemporary pieces.

Very interesting place. If you got a time you have to visit the tower and see the clock.
You will see greater sample of astronomic clock.

The interior was closed because the building is under construction but you can still view the exterior tower and the 15th century clock on its exterior made by Bartolomeo Manfredi
