This is not a place to see how people lived, or old furniture, or exhibitions on former residents. Rather this is some collections of artwork spread out, I would not recommend it to small children as it gets boring after a while.

The historians will love this place. It is big and bitsy. Some of it well done especially the palace right at the end. The castle had too many other works displayed that detracted from the history. The video at the end was probably very good...More

I’ve visited in may , not in the peak season. The castle itself was OK. You couldn’t really get to the top and there was not really a lot to see. I was semi-disappointed until I continue the rest of the tour. Overall I would...More

Some places are so grand and expansive that they are tough to take in. The Palazzo Ducale is like that. After a while, beauty is swallowed by beauty, and art fades into more art. That said, you should go and spend some time looking at...More

Things didn't start well due to some incredibly rude staff in the ticket office. It was confusing because apparently the Mantagna frescoes were sold out, so it wasn't clear what we could see. Just the Ducale Palace it seems. The staff inside the palace were...More

The height of Renaissance luxury. Very impressive apartments, Greco-Roman statuary, and imposing frescoes throughout.

Under-realised in contemporary museum terms, here's an example of how Mother italy has managed to squander its riches & not capitalise on its past. That having been said, this is nonetheless an extraordinary place & it beggars the mind how the Gonzagas, the original inhabitants...More
