    Amazing afternoon
I went to Isola Madre with a good friend of mine on a Thursday afternoon (Oct. 12) and it was a pure delight First of all, at this season and on a weekday, there wasn't a horde of tourists which was so much appreciated. We arrived around 2 pm and had first a small lunch/snack at Caffetteria La Serra. We then visited the Palace. The highlights of this palazzo were the Venetian room with a beautiful sophisticated trompe l’œil and the Marionette Theatre. The collection is among the most extensive and best conserved in the world. The botanical garden is exceptional. I can imagine how beautiful it could be during the camelias, magnolias or wisterias blooming. The Butia capitata, which in autumn produces large clusters of juicy orange-colored fruit with such a delicious exotic fragrance scented the alleys. It was a pure delight. Isola Madre is full of multi-colored birds as well as golden pheasants and white peacocks. It was indeed a relaxing afternoon. I cannot wait to come back next year in spring.

Unbelievably lovely, calm and peaceful gardens.
This is the quietest of the three Borromeo islands in Lake Maggiore. It consists of a beautiful parkland garden with lovely trees, shrubs and flowers, all looking really good and healthy. The perfect place for a stroll, with views and a gentle calming atmosphere. One for the botanist and gardener, without doubt. Highly recommended.

    Beautiful island
Lovely island beautiful peaceful tranquil gardens plus a grand house to view. There is a restaurant on site too but we only had a coffee which incurs a service charge if you sit outside. Big shout out to the Public ferry service which was brilliant too. I left my jacket on board when we returned to Stresa and told the lady at the ticket office she immediately got in touch with the crew before they embarked on their next trip and let me on board to retrieve it.

    Utterly beautiful!
We decided not to use the coach tour trip to Isola Madre, but to use the public ferry to take us there to enjoy the island within our time and not be rushed as a tourist group. The island is beautiful and stunning! The history, art, architecture, gardens are absolutely exotic and amazing! It was something out of a fantasy novel but real beauty. It was a real pleasure walking around, seeing the lake views around us too. All around us was a work of art in garden designs to artwork inside the main house. I would love to visit again in different seasons. Spring with flowers, summer warmth, tropical, autumn and winter beauty. Worth every minute, take your time, take in the beauty. Do not be rushed.

Beautiful garden but be aware rip off cafe , in very very small print 2 euros per person cover charge. So two iced coffees 12 Euros plus 4 Euros making 20 Euros for two. Total rip off. Don’t go there.

I visited on the same day as visiting Isola Bella and Isola Pescatori. Isola Madre felt quieter than the other two islands, with fewer tourists. Perhaps I was ahead of the crowds, or perhaps other people didn’t bother with this third island. The palace itself was nice but was nothing special - a standard European country palace. The gardens are what lifts this place above average, they are expansive and very well maintained, with lots of greenery and beautiful flowers even in the July heat. The peacocks and other colourful birds adds and extra bit of interest too.

It is worth noting other than one restaurant, there is nothing else to do on this island than see the palace and gardens, it is different to the other islands in that regard, so if you want to shop for souvenirs or have an ice cream, do that on the other two islands first before you come here.

Probably the most magnificent garden I’ve ever seen. The flowers were beautiful, the trees fabulous, lovely birds. The garden is more extensive than Isola Bella and less formal, and more to my taste.
We didn’t go in the house, but enjoyed a drink in the cafe, accompanied by white peacocks.
There’s a gift shop too.

We visited Isola Madre last week, whilst staying in Baveno, it's the island which is often overlooked by visitors who prefer to visit Isola Bella or Isola Piscatori, however Isola Madre has much to offer. The island has a palace to visit, and extensive grounds with formal and informal gardens, and many exotic birds, many of which wander around freely. There is an entrance fee of 11 Euros, but you can spend a long time wandering around the island. However, I would definitely avoid the café on the island, which is ridiculously expensive with very poor service. We just had a coffee and a mineral water, and ordered these at the counter and I carried them to my own table but was still charged 1.5 Euros per person service charge, which is ridiculous, so either take a bottle of water with you, or find an alternative when you leave the island. We'd definitely visit the island again, but wouldn't bother with the café.

A beautiful day at Lake Maggiore is a real treat. If you don't have all day to spend visiting all 3 islands, pick Isola Madre The botanical gardens are a real treat and beautifully designed. Don't miss the peacocks and other brightly colored birds and aviary full of small parrots. The palazzo and small church are also beautiful and interesting and the coffee shop has a nice view of the lake and city of Stresa.

Fantastic gardens and a lovely residence. A quiet calm everywhere on this island with well maintained gardens, blossom and scent. Almost the whole island is given over to the botanical gardens and residence so there's little point visiting unless you buy the tickets to access these. You can take the shortest ferry crossing from Baveno (about 6€ return) or the hop-on / hop-off ferry from Stressa, visiting the other two islands (Bella being the other good one and Pescatori can be skipped). Best to use the public ferry service for their fast, frequent and cheaper boats - http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/ The private boat 'captains' will try and entice you to go with them as soon as they spot you but that's much more expensive so be warned.

There's a lovely cafe on Madre within the gardens itself. And there are some restaurants with terraces onto the lake, down near the boat pier.

Isola Madre is superb if you love gardens and great views. We do and we recommend it.
