The first document talking about this church is dated back on 8th century, it is quite hidden and surrounded by houses so you can’t appreciate the beautiful porch.
The bell tower is not attached to the church few steps from the porch.
Inside with one big nave with acute arches.
Several beautiful frescoes are dated back in 15th century.

I like to visit old churches everywhere we go in Europe, especially in the small towns, where you barely ever run into someone inside.
I am always surprised when you can just walk in...no one inside...
Short and peaceful visit ...

We came across this church almost by accident and are glad we did. From the outside it looks like nothing, but was surprisingly beautiful, spacious, and cool inside. Has a pipe organ and large stone arch that I didn’t expect!

We spent only 5 minutes here as our young children weren’t terribly interested, but it was a lovely spot.

Stopped in to rest during a long walk. Very nice small church. Nice lake view immediately behind the church.

Whilst this church is well up to the standard of several town centre churches in and around lake Garda there is nothing of outstanding cultural or religious significance other than maybe it's stained glass windows.
When we visited it appeared that most visitors, like ourselves, were mainly cooling down from the 37oC temperatures outside! No bad thing....

It would be easy just to walk past this church but doing so would be missing a gem. Attractive from the outside it has a beautiful interior with particularly interesting stained glass windows - well worth spending half an hour of your time.

Also called the Chiesa Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Chiesa Parrochiale (Parish Church) this is a gem!!!

Romanesque from the outside with two carved Latin stones, one a column of the church the other opposite, a fine portico leads to an interior which has some beautiful mediaeval frescos which have survived the baroque period. The church can be a bit of a mish mash in periods but on the right side towards the altar fine frescos of Saint Albert among others contrast with a range of complete and incomplete frescos on the other side. It is well worth lingering and looking, because everywhere you look there is something to surprise.

As you leave that church, look to your right and you'll see a notice board by the low wall listing mediaeval sites around this by of lake Garda. To the left of that is what seems to be a carved Roman stone.

My first view of Santa Maria Maggiore was from outside at the monumental porch with its pillars: there was a crowd of primary children with their teacher talking animatedly to them (with many gestures)about the history of this church and the old inscriptions on a pillar. Enthusiasm is infectious! Inside it is a roomy and strong building. My second experience was attending the Sunday morning service: the place was alive now! It was full, and it was their church.Young people were involved, altare boys, a teenage girl leading the prayers, a man and woman reading from the bible.Everyone sang. The priest finished the service speaking in four languages --it was Pentecost, when everyone heard words in their own language. As a foreigner and tourist, I felt welcome. The church felt "lived-in", belonging to the community.
A building comes alive with its people!

You might have to look for it as it is out of the way, but worth visiting for the murals. We just stumbled across it. There is a ramp for wheelchair users.
