Total time needed here is 1-1.5 hours max, depending on the crowds. Restrooms located on site as well. Lovely castle with some amazing views when you climb to the top. The upper level is accessed in the far right corner when you enter the main square. The waterfront side is on th elect when you go past the first archway ahead of you in the main courtyard.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 2, 2024
- CaribbeanClaiLondon, United Kingdom89 contributionsCute CastleSmall castle, very scenic and lots of steps to climb. Not good for wheelchair or disabled access. We queued outside for 10mins to get in, the 1 in 1 out system worked well. Bathrooms available inside were decent. Worth a visit for the cheap price of about 6 euro each.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 7, 2024
- AndromedaDurhamCounty Durham, United Kingdom143 contributionsMorning ConcertWonderful experience - a flute and piano concert in the castle, in a room overlooking the lake. The concert itself was fabulous, but it was followed by drinks and canapés, and then a talk on the castle's history by the organiser. He slipped effortlessly from Italian to German to English and managed to keep his audience's attention. Entrance to the castle itself was included. The view from the top of the tower is breathtaking but the stairs could be challenging to anyone with limited mobility (or a fear of heights). Castle Museum was great. I had a bit of a soft spot for the taxidermy section!Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2024

From the outside the castle is the centre piece of Sirmione. It is lovely to walk around and so we decided to go in. We went along quite early in the morning and there wasn't any queue when we went in. There is not much of note inside the castle and the information boards are mainly about the structure of the castle and the rebuild and not really much about the history. What is worth it though is the stunning views from the top. Not only do you have fantastic views over Lake Garda but also you really see the peninsula. We went to the castle after we had boated around Lake Garda so we could also point out different places we had been. wow just wow for the views. The climb is not for anyone that cannot climb and decent a mountain of stairs though.

The Scaligero Castle is certainly one of the stops to make when visiting Lake Garda. The building and the view are breathtaking in their grandeur.
However, if you want to make this visit, you need to arm yourself with a lot of patience. Sirmione is among the most visited Garda cities and this means that it is teeming with tourists. For those traveling by car, finding available parking is not easy. From the car park you need to walk between 20 and 30 minutes to get to the historic centre. Moving among the people jamming the streets is not easy, also due to the number of tourist-catching restaurants and bars in excess. Then obviously there are those who try to be clever: while queuing to visit the Castle (not a short queue) a couple clearly overtook them just to make the visit.
I highly recommend avoiding the weekend and organizing your visit during the week, possibly arriving very early in the morning and bringing enough water and a packed lunch. For those who want more tranquility, it would be better to visit out of season.

One of the main reasons we went to
Sirmione was to visit this stunning castle. We had seen so many stunning images on Instagram and knew we had to be there to see it for ourselves.
Not only did we go inside the Castle but we also rented the local boat for a tour and managed to get a 360 view of this stunning, Castle.
If you're visiting Sirmione, I highly recommend renting a boat and take-in the stunning Garda island views! The boat hiring staff are quite friendly and helpful. There are deals to tour with other group or for a private hire.

Castello Scaligero is an example of lakeside fortification. The castle takes its name from the Della Scala family who dominated Verona in the 14th century.
The castle is the dominant feature of the city of Sirmione and therefore it is not surprising that there is a big queue to visit it. In the castle you can see the main courtyard, surrounded by walls and towers. You can find the wet dock courtyard there too.
After visiting the Castello, take a stroll around the old town of Sirmione. There are shops, restaurants, gelaterias and pizzerias.

Well preserved fortress which offers very beautiful panoramic views. I recommend booking your visit online in the early hours of the morning so you can visit the castle calmly and without crowds. Finally, if you also plan to visit the Grottoes of Catullus, it is better to get the combined ticket (which also includes the Roman Villa of Desenzano).

The view was nice, but that's about it. Very small inside with nothing to see/interact with. Booked online through the castle museum website to skip the queue only to be told that it's not a thing anymore...and ended up waiting in line in the sun for 30 minutes. 6 euros for a photo opportunity. At best.

The castle of Sirmione is one of the best preserved Scaliger fortresses of Lake Garda. It was built after the mid-fourteenth century, probably on the ruins of an ancient Roman fortification and was intended to defend the village. It takes its name from the Scala family that ruled Verona and its territory between the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle is surrounded by the waters of the lake and on one side was built the dock which, in the past, was the place of refuge of the Scaliger fleet. The castle is characterized by walls, three towers with dovetail battlements and an imposing keep. It can be visited inside and, like all castles, also that of Sirmione is linked to the sad story of a ghost, a story that I invite you to read.

You book online for a slot and then pay on entry (can double up and get a ticket to the ruins too).
The castle tour starts up on the ramparts, in a one way system followed by a walk around the base. Its a nice place i only wish there was more information on its history.

Looks like something out of a film but it is real. although i have lived in Italy 30 plus years their ancient monuments still can dazzle me. this castle complete with a drawbridge and moat is outstanding. the whole area from the castle onwards is outstanding, for a day trip or a weekend. worth paying for a proper tour to know the history. check out the fantastic walks and the thermal baths, outdoor exceptional in the winter as the water sooo cozy. few shopsopen in feb. but sufficient to enjoy alow season break without mobs of tourists

Somewhere I saw something that said you should book tickets for the castle online - like a time slot specifically- and then pay when you arrive. Is this true? Can I not just walk up and get entry? I ask because I can’t find anywhere to buy such tickets online. And I will be taking a day trip there so I don’t want to mess this up either lol.

We were there on day trip and just went to the castle when we arrived and paid the 6€ admission.
No issues.

Is the Castello Scaligero open in January. We are planning on visiting end of January. Times of opening? Where can we purchase tickets in advance? Thank you!
Written October 28, 2019
I have the phone and fax number if you wish to contact the castle direct , but don't expect High season opening hours , if they are open at all
Another point , if you have mobility problems , this is not the place to visit , as there are many steps to negotiate , which can be challenging for some people

Good day. Is it possible to leave a suitcase before visiting the castle? We will travel to Milan, but in the fall we wanted to visit the castle in Sirmione.
Written June 2, 2019
Не уверен! Может, проще оставить чемодан на ж/д вокзале в Милане. / I am not sure that it is possible! Maybe it will be easier to leave the suitcase at the railway station in Milano
