Obvioiusly a must when in Varenna
Yes, Varenna is very touristy - but after all your a tourist! And once you've had coffee or lunch down by the lake or in the piazza under the church, the Villa Monastero and the Hotel Villa Cipressi gardens are pretty much compulsory. The Villa Monastero garden goes right down to the lake and makes for very pleasant stroll although in truth the plantings aren't outstanding. And of course the villa is closed at the moment. The 200 year-old magnolia tree is worth noting though. And at this time of the year the Wisteria is in full bloom. Definitely a pleasant experience taking a liesurely walk and taking in the views.

    So peaceful
What a beautiful and peaceful place to admire and take in the picture postcard views. It's 13 euros to get in but it wasn't busy when we were there allowing us to wander around easily. There was a little cafe with lots of spare tables overlooking the lake. Highly recommended if you are visiting the area and want a bit of peace and tranquility.

    Worth a visit
When visiting Varenna, Lake Como you can't skip the two dominant villas here - Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi. Indeed you can buy a joint ticket for both. For Villa Monastero you can visit the villa and the gardens also. Beautifully manicured gardens and well worth a visit and set alongside the lake.

Combination Tour with Villa Cipressi Gardens
We bought discounted combination tickets for seniors (13 euros) for Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi. Although the gardens share the same lakeside view, both are done in different styles, with Villa Monastero being less manicured. There were plenty of places to sit and relax and garden paths and trails to explore. We had visited Varenna several times and had admired the gardens only from the street because the weather was less than ideal.

    Beautiful gardens
The gardens are magnificent and truly worth a look. The views of the lake are spectacular and this is a great way to relax and unwind a bit. We spend a little over an hour here - maybe 1.5 hours and thoroughly enjoyed the gardens.

Villa is amazing, needs effort to provide a greater experience for visitors.
Beautiful property and villa to visit inside. The Villa was impressive and had many original artifacts. This site needs to put more emphasis into showcasing the villa with guided tours (in various languages) instead of lengthy paper copy text in each room - could have been so much more interactive and informative. I did ask the young man at the door questions about the structure (which he kindly obliged, but no one upstairs did). Our visit was on a 40C day, much too hot to appreciate the beautiful setting

    Fabulous!
I visited Varenna previously in February however the gardens were closed as it was off season so I went back whilst visiting in August. There was no queue for tickets - I went at around 2pm on a Wednesday. The gardens and the views are just beautiful! It wasn’t busy at all so great for taking photos and relaxing. There is a small cafe and toilets within the gardens so you can stop and have a drink taking in the view. Lovely way to spend a couple of hours - the gardens are not huge so you can probably walk the whole place in an hour (or more if you stop along the way). Would definitely recommend! I didn’t bother buying the museum ticket as I was short on time. The gardens are less than a 10 minute walk to the ferry so very easy to get there and back.

    Magnificent Villa Monastero
Visited here in mid October & whilst didn’t see the glorious summer flowers, it was still beautiful & 100% worth visiting & exploring the gardens. We were lucky as it was a cloudy/sunny day, so we were able to appreciate the beauty of it. One of the good things in visiting in October was that is was also very quite. No queues & we could walk around in peace & quiet. A very beautiful villa & thoroughly recommended.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

Visited to be met by a hyper aggressive security guard who wanted to assault my 11 year old daughter. When I asked him to calm down he refused and continued ranting and raving about “you people” and refused to calm down.

A villa on a narrow and long piece of land next to the lake. Beautiful garden with pretty views. There was a long queue to get in as only one cashier was working.

Amazing visit, the scenic view takes your breath away from the very beginning; it’s gorgeous, garden is big and beautiful; it’s very relaxing and among the best place I visited around Lake Como! So worth it!
