About
Lecco's clock tower is the second highest tower in Italy and one of the highest in Europe. Now it's possible to visit it, in some days and only with reservation, thanks to the project that aims to revalue this monument. It will be a unique experience that will lead from the full of history basement of the tower up to the terrace on top of it from where you can admire a full 360 view of the city, the lake and its mountains.

We’re used to nickname it “Il Matitone” (Italian for “The Big Pencil”). I only climbed it once, when I was in high school and were hosting several students from various European countries for a cultural exchange. I suffer from both dizziness and claustrophobia, so you can imagine how scared I was when I was on the stairs. But the panorama was breathtaking and absolutely worthing it!

The belfry is about 96 meters high and is called Il Matitone. It towers over the city against the background of the mountain range. A very characteristic and unique view, especially from the nearby promenade along the lake. The belfry with a unique structure, unique in its style. If you want to reach the top, you need to book an appointment online. You will be able to select a time slot when booking. There are about 400 steps to get to the top.

I loved the bell tower. The tour is in Italian but they have an audio tour in English (and maybe other languages). It is worth going up the tower for the views over Lecco and the lake. If you don’t like heights then the climb up is by open stairs and ladders (my husband chose not to do the tour once he saw inside). It is free and is run by volunteers - there is a box at the end where they politely ask for a donation of your choosing.

This is a beautiful tower that dominated the Lecco skyline wherever you are. It adds a scenic background ti every view. I’m sure the views from the tower itself are as least as attractive on a clear day - unfortunately the only day I was in Lecco this trip it was raining heavily and the lake was covered in mist.

The bell tower of San Nicolò, located on the northern side of the basilica of the same name from which it takes its name, is one of the symbols of Lecco and dominates the skyline of the city.
Located inside the parish oratory, it was buit on top of an old 15th century defensive round tower that was part of the old fortification of the city in the Middle Ages and was inaugurated on Christmas night in 1904.
The bell tower is 96 meters high.

The Campanile dominates the landscape of this town. Visible from all locations, it is a charming building.

Wonderful experience, a lot of steps to climb but when you are arrived at the summit you can see all the town at your feet and all the mountains around you

If you are close to LECCO just pay short visit to this clock tower. Is close to city center and you can have a really good lunch close to the tower or ICE CREAM - GELATO.

My fellow traveller was unaware that the number of chimes correspond with the hour until we listened to its beautiful chimes.

A beautiful functioning clock tower.
