It is known as the last Gothic cathedral built in Italy. Construction began in 1396 , and did not finish until 1770. Its a rather pretty churh with lovely sculptures on the facade and quite symetrical.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 16, 2024
- RoseParaguacu, MG1,331 contributionsComo CathedralIt is an incredible experience to be able to enter and discover the Duomo Cathedral with its architecture, paintings, stained glass windows, sculptures. The external facade is wonderful and is on a very busy street with several restaurants and gelateria. Cost-benefit is high, but it's worth every penny.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 2, 2024
- MFaroItaly2,893 contributionsCathedral of Santa Maria AssuntaThe Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the most important church in Como and located in the historic center. Construction began at the end of 1300 and was completed only centuries later. This is reflected in the different architectural styles present. The interiors are beautiful. If you are in Como this is the classic destination not to be missed.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 31, 2024
- Marco P127 contributionsA unique monument...Cathedral with a wonderful facade, worth seeing from all sides, with a rear square larger than the front one. Adjacent there is a useful info point. Entrance on the right side for tourists is free. Absolutely worth a visit. The illuminated evening makes it even more so.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 6, 2024
- Knut HHamburg, Germany11,925 contributionsImpressive cathedralUnfortunately, when we visited, some parts were cordoned off because a service was taking place. Nevertheless, we were able to see the nave with the dome and beautiful windows. The view from the mountain was also fantastic. - Brown_SamanthaKennewick, Washington1,825 contributionsIt is the must do in Como City - the duomo is magnificientWords cannot describe how beautiful this duomo truly is. We admired the outside architecture, then was more impressed with the interior. The details are just magnificent. This made a drizzly day activity wonderful. Really liked the bright blue in the dome ceilings, also some great stained glass work. Just a lovely experience.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 9, 2024
- villalegre1973Aviles, Spain2,347 contributionsElegant Cathedral, near Lake Como!Catholic temple of worship! It began construction in the 14th century, but over the centuries underwent major modifications, giving different styles from Gothic to Baroque in its construction. The facade is elegant highlighting the large Rose window and large windows! It is an inescapable stop in Como!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 31, 2024
- luciussilvaeVilvoorde, Belgium5,476 contributionsRight in the middle of downtown.Very nice cathedral that stands out partly because of the construction of the Broletto, the former medieval town hall. The church is in Gothic style dating from 1770. The building is in cross shape with an impressive dome in the transept. Several handsome tapestries hang in the church.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 12, 2024

I met the Father though he didn't know English but he was kind enough to bless me and i felt lot of warmth in the way he made me feel heard without me telling him anything. The chruch walls have beautiful engraved art and signs. One should definitely visit the church.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten September 1, 2024
- Bagir BSamarkand, Uzbekistan568 contributionsCattedrale Di ComoDespite the simplicity of this Cathedral from Duomo di Milano, this Duomo is more authentic, you feel the real history in this construction. You can spend more time sitting and observing the view, cherishing the moment, and paying attention for each tiny detail made within the construction of this Duomo. So I suggest that those who were frustrated after visiting Duomo di Milano, I urge you to come here to Como and observe the real history of Duomo di Como or Cattedrale di Como.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 25, 2024

It's an amazingly cumbersome cathedral for such a provincial town. For a voluntary donation of 1 euro, you can live with a small guidebook describing the rather interesting interior decoration. The clock tower attached to the cathedral houses a tourist centre.

We visited once during our 6 day stay in Como but walked past it several times every day. It’s the focal point of Como Town. One day when we were passing there was a service on and the choir were singing, it was really very moving.
We stayed in an apartment 2 mins away and heard the church bells regularly throughout the day.
The cathedral was free to enter and was beautiful inside and out. The best thing was how the colours of the stone changed during the sunset and when it rained.
We enjoyed our visit here and used the duomo daily to get our bearings. The piazza in front of the duomo is good too.
Highly recommended when in Como.

Almost four hundred years were spent by Como workers for the construction of the Duomo, started in 1396, whose facade is still one of the most remarkable examples of late Gothic in northern Italy. Built to replace a previous structure, also dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, the work for its realization ended in the first half of the eighteenth century with the realization of the Dome designed by Filippo Juvarra. Of considerable interest is the facade executed between 1455 and 1486 and enriched with sculptural decorations, a work largely by the workshop of Giovanni Rodari to whom we owe the authorship of the two podiums with statues of Pliny the Younger and Pliny the Elder.

The cathedral in Como is named after St. Mary Assunta and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin. It is the main church of the city and the chair of the bishop.
Construction work on the cathedral began in 1396 on the site of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maggiore – on the shores of Lake Como – and was not completed until four centuries later – in 1770, when a luxurious Rococo dome was installed, by the famous master Filippo Yuvarra.
The Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral is considered one of the most important religious buildings in Lombardy and is impressive in size – 86 meters long, up to 57 meters wide and 75 meters high. Inside, the temple is built in the shape of a Latin cross with three naves that are separated by columns and a transept in the Renaissance style. The interior of the Cathedral in Como is decorated with great finesse and unique works of art, among which are ancient tapestries by the famous Archimboldo, as well as other equally talented craftsmen from Florence and even Antwerp. The 16th century paintings by G. Ferrari and B. Louini are also used in the design of the church.
How magnificently inscribed the cathedral in the city plan can be observed by climbing a funicular in Brunata. From above, the lake and the city are in the palm of your hand.

They were asking 1 Euro per person to enter the church, but we were out of Euros. So we went to McDonald’s to have lunch and to get change and then returned to enter the church. This church is also known as The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and is the main place of worship in the city of Como. It is located off the Piazza del Duomo and is recognizable by the teal blue domes. The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and was built between the 14th and the 18th centuries. It is recognized as one of the most important religious buildings of northern Italy. Well worth 1 Euro to tour the inside.

The magnificent three-aisled cathedral in the middle of the old town of Como is the most important church on the lake. You can also walk around it completely to get a good look at the many statues of saints and countless details.
The interior is particularly impressive with its artistic tapestries, many of which hang freely, the frescoes and the colorful stained glass windows.

Beautiful cathedral located within the historic center. Free visit with mandatory route for tourists. The evening lighting is also very beautiful. During the Christmas period you can admire the nativity scene inside.

The main attraction here is the Duomo. I read somewhere that this is the best example of the transformation of Gothic into Renaissance. Like all Gothic cathedrals, it was built over the course of centuries. Construction of the cathedral began in 1396 and was completed almost 400 years later - in 1770, when a rococo dome was built over the cathedral. Not only the marble facade is interesting, but also the interior. The cathedral offers free tours and also has a display case detailing the history of the cathedral with illustrations and photographs.

....to find few people, the visit becomes fantastic! 🤩
The ceiling is just fabulous!
The cathedral is part of the historical and architectural triptych of the city together with the Broletto and the Tower, and was begun in 1396, ten years after the more famous Milan Cathedral saw the light.

Strolling through a compact town centre like Como, you will surely not miss the imposing Como Cathedral. Construction of this Gothic cathedral commenced at the end of the 14th century, and took almost 4 centuries to complete. The Cathedral looked resplendent at dusk during the Christmas season with the equally imposing Christmas tree at Piazza Duomo lighting up its facade and the night sky. The interior is impressive in its own right though it does not exude the wow factor unlike other bigger European cathedrals.
