The Sentierone is one of the most famous avenues in Bergamo. Buildings such as the Donizetti Theater and the Church of San Bartolomeo overlook this pretty tree-lined avenue. Built in 1620, although initially it was a small path. In the 1900s, the Sentierone was modernized with the construction of the Quadriportico,. Today the Sentierone is considered the heart of Bergamo Bassa, one of the most important avenues for both shopping and catering. Some significant events that affect the city also often take place at the Sentierone.

Long, wide and lively avenue that is 'the' centre of Bergamo. The City Hall, porticoes, the Donizetti Theatre, the beautiful Torre dei Caduti, statues, green spaces and plenty of restaurants, shops and cafes.
The best place in the city to window-shop, people-watch, enjoy a coffee or an aperitivo and enjoy the atmosphere.
Less impressive than the Citta' Alta, but definitely more authentic.

This is not only the high street for shopping in Bergamo with all the major names you'd expect to find; it is an historically important urban artery, running from Palazzo Frizzoni (City Hall) to Bergamo’s main church, la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo e Stefano. This tie between the city’s commercial and religious inclinations is no coincidence; they represent two driving forces of the city. Most folks will be inclined to stop at Balzer, the cafè across the street from the not-yet-reopened Donizetti Opera House. Try their classic dessert, polenta e osei (corn meal with birds) if you can handle something REALLY sweet.

Once it was the "parade" street of the nobles of Bergamo. Still today it is very nice to stroll along, or have a coffee at Balzer coffee shop.

Do you have a new suit? A new dress? A new boyfriend or girlfriend? Walk ap and down the Sentierone and everybody that matters will know. Do you want to meet people you have not seen in 50 years? Sit at one 0f the many open air bars: sooner or later your friend will walk by. A pleasure with a nice weather.

A stylish street surrounded by classical buildings such as the Donizetti theatre.
Have a coffee at elegant cafe Balzer (pay first at the cashier's). This is a nice place to see locals going about their daily business.

High end shops in the lower town of Bergamo. Right on the main drag. If you happen to be walking by, it can occupy a few minutes. Not worth a journey to visit.

You walk along the “Sentierone”, as we call it here, the longest street in Bergamo downtown and you can smell chocolate in the air, so good! This happens during the end of January for the Bergamo Chocolate festival! Check my blog in bio to read more!

It is a nice place to watch people since you will find that there are few shops, a nice old caffè and lots of people that are walking with their children and family there and meet others at this place. Best time is Saturday afternoon to watch people.
