When you find yourself on the San Vigilio hill, it is worth taking your steps to the park of the same name. You will find San Vigilio Castle there. Located 496 meters high on the hill in the past it played a strategic role in the case of enemy attacks. The first news of a fortification dates back to around the sixth century. The present building has been rebuilt many times in the past. In 1829 some parts of the castle were demolished. Currently, the castle is owned by the municipality of Bergamo, which opened the entire castle to visitors in 1962. The hill of San Vigilio and the castle are also a great view point.

Quite tricky entrance to the top. Being here twice (day by day) - firstly big mist without views on more then 5 meters, second day - views were quite good. On the top there is round table with description of surrounding tops. The castle is located in the park, therefore kindly note that there are opening hours. Castle entrance is free of charge. The park is also very nice and good kept.

The castle itself is pretty typical, but it's high on a hill, and if you take the steps to the top you'll be rewarded with wonderful 360 views. Excellent place to watch the sunset.

This is the high point of the Rock and needs a bit of energy to get up there, as there is some climbing involved. If you want to see the surrounding countryside however, and get a feel for the history of the place, it is well worth the effort. The bus will leave you very close to the Castle if you choose to travel by road, which I definitely recommend at least once, the views of Bergamo unfurling as the bus climbs are stunning. There is a small garden there also but the views are really the Big Thing.

There's not much left of the old castle to see but the views from up there - over the city, the surrounding hills and valleys, the distant snow peaked mountains - is absolutely unmissable.

A trip on Citta Alta's other funicular , San Vigilio , is well worth it for the views of the surrounding countryside and the mountains beyond . We started to climb the steps to the viewpoint on the top of the castle ruins but were tempted to have refreshment at the Relais San Viglio before we got there . However we did walk quite a way round the base of the castle . There are several walks along tree lined walks for those who want gentler exercise .

We took a walk to the castle & climbed the steps inside. Very high, with some lovely views. Interesting as well - there's a short story/explanation inside, which I will show in the photo. We walked around the gorgeous grounds - and what a sight to behold! A most amazing view of the whole of Bergamo - all around the garden is a different & breathtaking view. A photographers delight!

It was a hot day, and we took the Funicular San Vigilio rather than walking. The funicular has a small charge. You must use coins to buy tickets for the funicular from a machine, and there is no staff to help you figure out what you are buying. It was a little confusing. Once you get off the funicular at the top, admire the amazing views from the lookouts, then keep walking uphill to the castle.

The castle part is free of charge. At first we thought you could only view the tower ruins from the outside, but fortunately there was a young family there who showed us the entrance in the first tower, and you can take the tower stairs to a grassy area. There were more viewpoints from there. It doesn’t take long if you use the funicular, and it is worth exploring. There are restroom facilities near the castle.
