Nice old castle, not much to see but views is great. You can see the alps and whole bergamo. Place is free and easy to visit by funicolar or bus 21. About 1 kilometre to walk.

Castello di San Vigilio is located higher than Citta Alta and you can get up there either by walking the steep street of Via San Vigilio or by taking the funicolare.
The upper station of the funicolare has a terrace which is a beautiful view point but you have to go further to the castle. It is a short walking distance on the right - just follow the info arrows. The entrance is free and when you go to the top of the castle, fabulous views will open before you - Bergamo and its surroundings.
Then you can pass through the only open tower and get down to a small park around the castle which is so tranquil!
Close to the upper station of the funicolare, there are a couple of nice small restaurants where you can continue to contemplate the wonderful views along with enjoying some local food.
If you use the funicolare, just keep in mind that the ticket is valid for 75 minutes, and when you buy your tickets from the lower station you'd better have some coins for the vending machine. Or else, you will have to find the kiosk at the bus station of Bus No.1 where you can also buy tickets.
But the best way is to get one of the tourist tickets (24 hrs, 72 hrs, etc) which include all the public transport in Bergamo.
Don't forget to go there on a clear day.

There is little to see but it is worth coming up in the small funicolare and mooch around for half an hour inside the castle's ruins and the grounds around it. You get great views over Bergamo and the mountains.

The castle is located a bit down the path of the funicular, at the entrance is a toilet and a park. Walking around the park is nice although there aren't any views, because of trees. There's a small fountain and some seating.
You can climb one of the towers up to the top, here you have a beautiful view of the valley and surrounding area, although a house blocks the view of the city. There are trees so there's shade (and wind), so it's a nice place to cool down on a hot summer's day.
Keep in mind it's quite a climb.

This is the high point of the Rock and needs a bit of energy to get up there, as there is some climbing involved. If you want to see the surrounding countryside however, and get a feel for the history of the place, it is well worth the effort. The bus will leave you very close to the Castle if you choose to travel by road, which I definitely recommend at least once, the views of Bergamo unfurling as the bus climbs are stunning. There is a small garden there also but the views are really the Big Thing.

This is accessible by taking the second funicular from Citta Alta.
The castle is a ruin but you can climb inside one tower and get amazing 360degree view of the surrounding countryside. there are also some pleasant grounds, and a clean toilet.

We visited after taking the second train up from Citta Alta, a pleasant trip in itself. Some good restaurants near the station, expensive though! The walk up is a struggle if your feeling tired but even a trip the area below is very nice and well worth it. Very quiet and peaceful area.

If the climb uphill can be challenging, please be assured it sure is worthwhile! Both for the breathtaking views from the top to the pin drop silence you come to enjoy when you catch your breath in the nearby somewhat hidden away garden!....as big city residents like us earn for & rarely get to experience!

Go on a sunny day and you'll have the most beautiful 360 degree views over the surrounding country side. take the funicular near the natural museum, also near where bus No 1 stops at the top of Citta Alta. You can get on the Funicular for free with the city bus ticket. I recommend getting the 2.5 euro day pass.

In my opinion, if you were lucky and the visibility were fine, it's an amazing place to visit and take nice pics.
You can reach there taking the Funicolare San Virgilio or if you want to enjoy the view, take a walk.
There is nothing on the castle, there is a park around and the astonishing view.
Check the opening hours before get in the park,
