Just wonderful, there is nothing more to say. Especially worth to see is the Piazza Vecchia with the Palazzo Nuovo and the Palazzo della Ragione, Cattedrale (Duomo) and the Chiesa di Sant'Alessandro Martire. Inside the historic center there are also nice cafes and restaurants, where you can have a meal, a snack or just relax with a drink. You shuold not only stop at the main sights, you shuold also take time to walk around the narrow streets. There are also several shops with nice handcraft works of good quality from local origin or souvenir shops with cheap plastic souvenirs from China. I recommend you to use one of the funiculars instead of walking, as the old town is quite high. The old town is surrounded by a historic city wall.

A view of the two cities Bergamo alta and Bergamo are mixed from the top of the hill.
Walking through alleys it is a return to the time when Bergamo called attention to many people!! Stendhal lived there and then I could understand.

Amazing! Hilltop medieval town. Gorgeous narrow winding alleyways lined with restaurants, bars and lovely shops and coffee shops. We were there as the Christmas decorations were all put up and the effort that was made by all of the shop owners was wonderful. It felt like being in a Dickens fairy tail. We were lucky enough to have the most beautiful sunny weather for our time there. We found prices to be similar to Britain, little bit more expensive than Southern Italy but not really expensive.
Everything was at hand and easy to get to. Buses. Run every 15 minutes or so down to the new town, Cita bassa, to the train station or to the airport.

To visit here is to step back in time. Cars are limited, with the cobbled streets and squares given over to pedestrians. Great walls surround the city, which can form the basis of a good walk, or you can just lose yourself in a town which seems to have hardly changed over the centuries. There are a number of attractions in the area, or you could do the steep walk up, enjoy a coffee and lunch, then take the venerable funicular back down.

I spent the best part of a Friday simply wandering around this lovely old hilltop city. Armed with some hints from my hotel I made for the surrounding Venetian walls and started to walk along them, taking in the beautiful views over the newer city below and the surrounding hilly countryside. I liked the fact that there were numerous park benches strategically placed along the walls . Very thoughtful.
Twice, during the day I walked into the old town to navigate the small, narrow, cobbled streets for essential refreshments, biological breaks and exploration of the many historical buildings are tucked away there. Wonderful.
Thoroughly recommended. Take the time to do this slowly and just immerse yourself into a quiet, peaceful other world.

The upper town (Citta Alta) of Bergamo is the medieval part of Bergamo, rising up about 100 m above the newer lower city.
It can be reached by funiculare (from the Viale V. Emanuelle II) or by foot (a 15-30 minutes stroll uphill).
Take at least 2-3 hours (including getting up and down) for visiting some of the most interesting attractions and strolling through the narrow medieval streets of the old town).

Situated above the modern Bergamo, the Old City is a beautiful place with a spectacular view of Bergamo. Winding alleys, cozy squares, small cafes and fantastic restaurants. A most pleasant place and time well spent.

Bergamo is a treasure to visit. The Citta Alta is reached via a faniculare, a fun adventure to ride up to the old city. Casual Shopping options are great. Walk up the Campanile is wonderful!

Visited Bergamo on a recommendation from a local while staying in Franciacorta and it certainly did not disappoint.
We started in the ‘lower’ / ‘new’ town and instead of taking the bus or funicular, walked up. The footpath starts near the funicular entry to the left and with average level of fitness takes about 15 minutes. The walk itself does not offer many views, but is is very authentic and somewhat romantic - you are ascending an old town by a narrow cobblestone path...
At the end of the footpath you reach the city gate (check out the Venetian lion!) which offers nice views of the new town below. From here we turned left and followed the Venetian city walls which wrap the Citta Alta. You may think that a wall is a wall, but trust me, the scale and look of these walls is quite a sight and definitely worthy of the UNESCO heritage status.
While in Citta Alta definitely check out the ‘main’ square, the two churches and Capella Colleoni. For the best views of Citta Alta, climb up the tower (which also has a lift for those who may find it difficult or do not want to climb the stairs).
Overall, I would describe Bergamo as a must visit town if you love history, Renaissance and Florence/Venice but do not enjoy the huge crowds that come with better known Italian towns. Definitely worth a day trip if you are in Milan.

The top site in bergamo is definitely worth the visit. I spent around 5 hours in citta alta. I caught both funicular railways starting with the one that takes you up to the citadel and the one that takes you to another viewing point and a fort. Do take both of the funicular railways as on a hot day it will be a struggle to walk to both places. I caught them one way up and walked back down (you can find maps of the area in the tourist information centre outside the train station). I also walked around the citadel walls that is a UNESCO site and is well worth it as the views are just epic. Also dont forget to visit the basilica, cathedral and the campanone as they are very detailed and interesting and they are located in the centre of the citadel by piazza vecchia. Also visit the city gates and walk back down the white one.

Meglio lasciare l'auto in aeroporto. A quell'ora dal centro città non ci sono mezzi per l'aeroporto. Troveresti parcheggi a pagamento e taxi. Non conviene.
Salve a tutti, a ottobre lavorerò per una settimana in città alta. Non ho problemi a camminare, ma mi farebbe comodo un parcheggio gratuito non troppo lontano. Quello dello stadio è a pagamento?
