Wonderful old city center on the mountain top
Fantastic wires, you can walk around the whole old city wall on top, great wires over the modern city, mountains in the horizon and hills behind. Beautiful old houses within the city walls. Lots of small shops, expensive but nice. Small piazzas with plenty of restaurants and bars, also tourist prices so it’s worth eating just outside the old city on the narrow roads below, 10 min walk and half the price. Worth a visit.

    Bergamo - a layered surprise !
Bergamo is a two-tiered city : up on the hills is the Città Alta (Upper Town) with a medieval centre, while down below is the Città Bassa (Lower Town), which is the modern town. You can reach the Citta Alta by funicular, stairs or bus. From Citta Alta, you can take another funicular upto San Viglio for the iconic views of Bergamo. The centre of action is Piazza Vecchia, but every little lane and alley in Bergamo oozes charm. While exploring the Alta, dont forget to drop by La Marianna for gelato and Il Fornaio for focaccia.

It's quite a walk but we'll worth it. The scenery is breathtaking and the architecture and the views is well worth it. Take time to eat at the local pizzerias and gelato cafés along the walk as you will not be disappointed ❤️😍.

Go early to enjoy the history
Got up to the old city via the funicular, which is near San Marco square. Had an awesome day visiting, the churches, the fort and cute shops scattered around the squares. The streets are cobblestone so wear good walking shoes and be prepared to walk up and down hill. Suggest to go first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds which build throughout the morning.

    Very busy in the afternoon
We visited first in the afternoon, and it was very crowded. When we returned the next morning there were very few visitors and the light was much better for photos. Several magnificent churches. Lots of souvenir shops. But you can find quiet parks, and cafes away from the main Piazza where you can enjoy a pleasant glass of wine.

    beautiful city - just lovely
Bergamo is divided into two districts. The upper town, the historic Città Alta, sits majestically on a hill with many sights and great buildings, and the lower town, which lies at motorway level but makes all shopper’s hearts beat faster. Since we only had one day, we focused exclusively on the upper town.

    A medieval marvel
The ‘Citta Alta’ or High City is a medieval jewel perched on a hill directly overlooking the modern city of Bergamo with views over some spectacular countryside beyond. We approached it past the shops of the Via Guiseppe Verdi and ascending up the Via Pignoli through the ancient arch of the Porta Saint Augustin making a detour to see the cloisters of a monastery converted into a university before heading to the city centre. Here we had lunch on the first floor of an ancient hostelry before visiting the 12th century Basilica next to the cathedral. We found the ticket machine at the entrance e to the funicular too complicated to operate so descended instead to the modern city via a number of flights of stone steps.

The top site in bergamo is definitely worth the visit. I spent around 5 hours in citta alta. I caught both funicular railways starting with the one that takes you up to the citadel and the one that takes you to another viewing point and a fort. Do take both of the funicular railways as on a hot day it will be a struggle to walk to both places. I caught them one way up and walked back down (you can find maps of the area in the tourist information centre outside the train station). I also walked around the citadel walls that is a UNESCO site and is well worth it as the views are just epic. Also dont forget to visit the basilica, cathedral and the campanone as they are very detailed and interesting and they are located in the centre of the citadel by piazza vecchia. Also visit the city gates and walk back down the white one.

Just wonderful, there is nothing more to say. Especially worth to see is the Piazza Vecchia with the Palazzo Nuovo and the Palazzo della Ragione, Cattedrale (Duomo) and the Chiesa di Sant'Alessandro Martire. Inside the historic center there are also nice cafes and restaurants, where you can have a meal, a snack or just relax with a drink. You shuold not only stop at the main sights, you shuold also take time to walk around the narrow streets. There are also several shops with nice handcraft works of good quality from local origin or souvenir shops with cheap plastic souvenirs from China. I recommend you to use one of the funiculars instead of walking, as the old town is quite high. The old town is surrounded by a historic city wall.

The Citta' Alta is an interesting old part of the city of Bergamo with good views over the main city. It is, of course, a tourist destination, although in June (2023) it was not over busy. There are loads of town guides who purposely stand small parties in front of "sights" making photos difficult - for the sake of the city's tourism, more courtesy should be extended. The area is quite small and has some beautiful old buildings. Expect to pay "tourist prices" for "tourist food / service" in food outlets. There is charge (€5) to visit the Basilica and photography is not allowed. Again, not tourist friendly

The narrow main street opens unexpectedly into piazzas and gives off numerous smaller side streets. An excellent range of shops with a balance between food, fashion and crafts. Just a 50 minute train ride from Milano Centrale; take the 1 or 1a bus up to the citta alta; great views!

I'm definitely biased because I've lived in Bergamo for 10 years. The first time I saw it I was speechless, but even after so many years, going back still has the same effect. I think it is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, art, history and culture are in every corner and alley. There is obviously the problem of parking and restricted traffic areas, I recommend you take the 1A bus from the station. Obviously it is an extremely tourist area so especially on weekends you will find it very crowded. During a stay in Bergamo, however, it is unmissable to visit the historical part of this splendid city (without neglecting the lower part which is still beautiful!)

This was a real surprise. You will surely go to Milano, one day, take the time to visite Bergamo, not far away, only 50 min by train. A real architectural wander, once a Serenissima city, it still bears a Venetian style. The walk will offer you views, gardens and building of great beauty with hidden restaurants and pretty shops.

To visit here is to step back in time. Cars are limited, with the cobbled streets and squares given over to pedestrians. Great walls surround the city, which can form the basis of a good walk, or you can just lose yourself in a town which seems to have hardly changed over the centuries. There are a number of attractions in the area, or you could do the steep walk up, enjoy a coffee and lunch, then take the venerable funicular back down.

I spent the best part of a Friday simply wandering around this lovely old hilltop city. Armed with some hints from my hotel I made for the surrounding Venetian walls and started to walk along them, taking in the beautiful views over the newer city below and the surrounding hilly countryside. I liked the fact that there were numerous park benches strategically placed along the walls . Very thoughtful.

Twice, during the day I walked into the old town to navigate the small, narrow, cobbled streets for essential refreshments, biological breaks and exploration of the many historical buildings are tucked away there. Wonderful.

Thoroughly recommended. Take the time to do this slowly and just immerse yourself into a quiet, peaceful other world.

A view of the two cities Bergamo alta and Bergamo are mixed from the top of the hill.
Walking through alleys it is a return to the time when Bergamo called attention to many people!! Stendhal lived there and then I could understand.

The upper town (Citta Alta) of Bergamo is the medieval part of Bergamo, rising up about 100 m above the newer lower city.
It can be reached by funiculare (from the Viale V. Emanuelle II) or by foot (a 15-30 minutes stroll uphill).
Take at least 2-3 hours (including getting up and down) for visiting some of the most interesting attractions and strolling through the narrow medieval streets of the old town).
