The Basilica of Sant'Alessandro in Colonna is located in the center of Bergamo Bassa. A beautiful basilica that houses the relics of Bergamo's patron S. Alessandro, rich in valuable works by local painters. The church is very special, with its peculiar column placed in the front square. The origins of the building date back to the first centuries of Christianity when the saint martyred in Bergamo. The current structure comes from the 17th century. The facade is in the neoclassical style from the 18th century. The interior has a Latin cross plan with a single nave. A temple full of works of art and architectural elements. Worth seeing while walking around the city.

The carillon is wonderful. Mostly the church is closed to the usual tourists. If you're lucky and she's open, then you should check it out.

We didn't found any speciality why this church should be on the list of the main attraction. Most probably there are at least a dozen of similer churches.

This was my Parish Church back in the 60's before I emigrated.
It is on the most calm, cool places wher you can rest and meditate. You dont have to be Catholic to enter. It is half wah in a street, Via S. Alessandro, that begins in the centre of town and terminate at the S- Giacomo Gate, on the old venician walls. Youi have to walk this street as is too narrow for buses. Worth doing it.

Various gorgeous chapels of various saints including two designated to Pope Paul John XXIII, who was born here and claimed as the famous son of Bergamo. Wonderfully set along the main vicolo.
