Get higher up the mountain to visit the castle, dine out and get a spectacular view looking down on the medieval city below. Tickets for this can be used on the other funicolar in bergamo, and the buses too, so don't keep buying a ticket per journey. Very well run!

The San Vigilio only consists of just a single car which is drawn by a cable from the lower station on the western edge of the old town to the upper station near to the castle. (A proper funicular has two cars and the weight of the upper one descending assists the lower one going up.)
The San Vigilio runs every 15 minutes except during the lunch hour. During that time, a small bus (route 21) carries passengers up and down on the narrow precipitous road that connects the two.
On our visit there appeared to be an electrical or electronic fault when we were coming down. The car came to a halt a few metres below the top station. The operator radioed for assistance which appeared in the form of men with ladders. The passengers were conducted to safety and the bus was brought along as a rail replacement service.
Normally it is a smooth and effortless 3-minute journey. Fare is EUR 2.50 but an ATB (local bus company) day ticket is valid on the service.

Well worth the 1.30€ to ride the funicolare!Great view from the top and the castle is fun to explore. Beware the funicolare closes from 1245 to 1500 so don't get stuck at the top!

Taking the funicolare up to San Vigilio is a must at least once in the duration of your visit. Before going up, one must realize that the view on Bergamo Citta Alta is best at sunset, when the sun is behind you and the colors on the buildings turn warm amber or at night when the city is lit. During daytime, the sun is right in front of you so that's something you will have to consider avoiding if photography is your thing. The ticket is Eur.1.30 which can be purchased at the kiosk on Colle Aperto, near the bus station 1a, otherwise at the vending machine in the funicolare hall. if you have a Bergamo Card, the ride is free. Funicolare is running until late at night but check with the conductor to be on the safe side. The best view by all means is the balcony of the funicolare. I have scanned the entire place and really, nothing beat the balcony for space and clarity. There are some lovely places to dine, especially Ristorante San Vigilio adjacent to the church and the clock tower of San Vigilio, although their balcony is overlooking the gorgeous valley on the other side. On the way back, I strongly recommend to take the street running parallel to the funicolare, it is no more than a 10 minute walk but with an amazing scenery and romantic stroll. One must watch out for the mad cyclists coming uphill sometimes right at you as if they were on the Giro D'Italia. I would definitely avoid the castle - i went all the way up, climbed the rotten stairs to find out the the view in most places is blocked by shrubs and trees and the "balcony" overlooking the Citta Alta is simply closed. No way you can open the gate so save your stamina for other things.

If you thought the views from the historic Citta Alta were good, please take the time to go up the Funicolare to San Vigilio. The views are tremendous with the Citta Alta in front of the plains below and from the back the Alps can be seen. A few restaurants are on the left after the trip with the castle a walk to the right. Nice smooth ride with polite, friendly drivers. If visting for two or three days the €7 72 hour ATB ticket is well worth buying on arrival at the airport.

Of the two funicolares in Bergamo Citta Alta, this one goes to San Vigilio and the hills above. The funicolare is not an attraction in itself, but a means to travel up. The Bergamo website describes a series of walks, and there are pamphlets in Italian describing the itineraries at the funicolare. The first walk goes around the Castello, which has wonderful views from the wall around it. There are stairs leading up to the inside of the castle, although they are not marked - I followed someone else. The other walks pass above beautiful valleys and before villas. The best walk and easiest to follow with the map on the pamphlet is a walk returning from San Vigilio back down to Begamo Upper City. This is an easy walk through hamlets with wonderful views of the upper city, not to be missed.

If someone does not like to walk too much, this line is the perfect solution for him. It's worth taking the Funicolare to the hill of S. Vigilio. It runs up and down every 30 minutes. The train is comfortable, the journey takes a while and allows you to admire the panorama of Bergamo. You can look at the Citta Alta from above. The best view of the city. Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines, at the ticket office, but you can also use a 24-hour ticket for public transport in Bergamo.

Very nice experience. You buy an €1.5 ticket from a booth round the corner or from a machine at the station. The ticket is valid for 75 min, so you can use it on your way back. The view at the top of the hill is amazing, but you can't spend more than 75 minutes. It is worth visiting to understand why the Castle was built there. They hole area around Bergamo is laid down in front of view. You can see everything within a few miles distance.

This is the second funicolare in Bergamo, leading up to the area of San Vigilio. It's cheap and you can use it to get to the Castello di San Vigilio from where you will see the most beautiful views of Bergamo and its surroundings.
There is a terrace at the upper station of the funicolare which is also a perfect view point. A couple of small cosy restaurants will help you to recharge your battery after strolling around.
The ticket is valid for 75 minutes, can be bought either at the vending machine at the lower station (no change, no banknotes - so you must have coins), or at the bust station of Bus No.1.
You will have perfect views of the area while you are riding the funicolare too.
Give it a try!
