It is the birthplace of the great musician from Bergamo, the creator of contemporary art and culture, known all over the world. The birthplace is only two small rooms, now empty, in the basement of the building where the Donizetti family lived for many years in bad conditions. On the upper floors is the exhibition illustrating the life of the composer and patron, thanks to whom he could learn and become famous. Really engaging and very well kept. Nice place with great emotional value for fans of Donizzetti's music. It not to be missed.

An hour by train from Milan, Bergamo is a MUST. The city is charming...the new and the old on different tiers with fabulous views and wonderful restaurants. The Casa Natale is a great snapshot of the Great composer, and it is FREE!! In addition, the composer's museum is a short walk through town.

The answer is probably not a lot , especially when they have been somewhat sanitised . The basement where Donizetti was born and brought up is a good deal cleaner and not cluttered as it would have been when a family of seven children and parents lived in these two rooms , However it does make you appreciate that in spite of his humble beginnings he , and his elder brother , who became an important musical figure at the court of the Ottoman sultan , managed to achieve considerable success in their chosen fields . There is not a lot to see apart from the very informative displays about the family's history , Donizetti's career , and the life of Simon Mayr , the Bavarian immigrant who 'discovered ' the two brothers and promoted Gaetano's career as the prolific composer he became . There is also a small exhibition about the construction of Bergamo's 'other' opera house , in Bergamo Bassa , now called the Donizetti Theatre .

Donizetti the great composer was born in a very pauvre family. The house itself is nothing special even for opera lovers.

We are big opera buffs, and Donizetti fans, but the museum is average at best. It is fun to see some of the scores, but think you have to be an opera devotee to derive much pleasure from this museum.

You will be shocked to see the miserable house in which one of the greatest composers was born. Two rooms in the basement, without any windows, dark, gloomy. Donizetti was born to a very poor family of workers. It was only some years after his birth that his farther made some money and moved to a proper house. It is really quite amazing how a genius could be born in such a shabby place. And on the top floors there is now a little theatre and an exhibition dedicated to Donizetti's life and creations.
