In 1780 the Mayor of the city Alvise Contarini leave the city and he gave as a gift this beautiful fountain made by marble Zandobbio.
Octagonal tub surrounded by several statues , two sphinxes facing Palace Reason and Palace New, then four lions and four snakes.

The fountain decorates the beautiful old town square. The design is really interesting, and it contains lions holding the chains with their own mouths.

The fountain takes its name from Alvise Contarini. It was built with the intention of beautifying the central square, Piazza Vecchia, and providing the inhabitants with water for domestic purposes and during droughts. In 1885 , the fountain was pulled down to make way for a statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi. A few decades later, at the beginning of the 20th century, it was reassembled in its original position and a monument to the hero was placed in the Bergamo Bassa. This isn't only a beautiful fountain with pleasent cold and refreshing water but, the most important is that it is fountain with drinking water. You can quench your thirst and to take the water with you from a two water drinking outlets. A beautiful medieval fountain in the middle of the Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the Citta Alta.

One of the best moment at Citta Alta was this square with the fountain in Piazza Vecchia. With no map I only walked around with no control and was happy when I saw this I had not done good preperations before this day trip and tourist office outside train station had siesta for 1,5 hours and I hadnt time for waiting so with a lot of luck I run into this top ranked tourist place. Had 2-3 good hours up here.

Having a fresh water fountain right in the Plaza certainly adds colour and character to the place & enhances the ambience no end. Heard somewhere the water in Bergamo & Lombardy is the cleanest most potable around. So go ahead & do your thing!

Fontana Contarini is a nice, small fountain in the middle of Piazza Vecchia in Citta Alta. So, you can't miss it if you go and stroll through the Upper City.
It is a nice composition of statues of lions and snakes. There is a lot of restaurants and cafes around the fountain on the square and it's relaxing to sit at one of them and watch the passers-by. And the fountain of course....

Beautiful octagonal fountain in the center of the Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo. It is sorrounded by statues of lions, snakes and a sphinx that pours water. You can't miss it because it's the only fountain in Piazza Vecchia.
