A small church that is hardly noticed from the outside. You cross the threshold and immerse yourself in the spirituality of the Middle Ages. A 15th-century church with one nave decorated with numerous frescoes and "Scenes of Mary's life" and "Annunciation" by Lorenzo Lotto. Also visit the crypt, which is the oldest in the Bergamo area. The Church of San Michele Al Pozzo Bianco is the jewel of Bergamo's Citta Alta. A timeless place. For those who love the raw simplicity of the art of this period, it is an unforgettable experience. Admission free.

strolling around upper Bergamo, we passed by here. and just as we had a lot of time, we steped in, not expecting anything. but this church offers some really wonderful fresco painting, going back to the 12th century, and in the crypta even dating back to 800 AD. we spent about an hour here, even if we thought it would not take us more then 5 minutes... To fully enjoy the fresco, drop some coins at the entrance fee to light the church up.

It was a bit hard to find , but it was worth it. The option to turn the light on is not inside, but at the door outside (1 euro is more than enough to see everything). The simple ancient church with beautiful frescos (in the crypt too). I was alone but the church attendant and it was a wonderful experience

The art and craftsmanship is over the top beautiful! The architecture divine. Literally. Why don’t we make such incredible churches and buildings like these anymore?

San Michele al Pozzo Bianco is a very ancient church with beautiful paintings, a witness of art of ancient times in Lombardy. Visiting the church means also visiting a beautiful district of old town Bergamo.

This was one of my favourite churches in Bergamo. Compared to many of the others it is very simple & unadorned but the frescoes are beautiful & the church has a feeling of peace & calmness. It's easy to miss but well worth searching out.

Very good frescoes by Lorenzo Lotto. Very convenient for visit if you descend from Citta Alta by foot to Accademia Carrara, the church is near the gate.

I found myself outside in the fresh sunbathe air on a hill in Bergamo Alta overlooking Bergamo Bassa: a breathtaking panorama lays below with stunning views of the same city. Once I arrive near the Former Church of Sant’ Agostino on the Piazza della Fara, I take Via Porta Dipinta, which is a hilly street that leads to the old city of Bergamo. After 50 metres on the left there is a very old church which is home to an entire Lorenzo Lotto fresco-cycle devoted to the Storie della Vergine (Stories of the Virgin Mother; 1525). Curiously enough, Lotto lived next door to the church in the Casa del Vicario (House of the Vicar), which today belongs to the Ursuline Sisters.I give you a tip: it's a jewel!

I have a feeling people don't really know about this little medieval gem. Do please try to put it onto your itinerary when in Città Alta, you won't regret it.
