Rude competition for the cathedral that is located in Piazza del Duomo but whose Maria Maggiore church and Cappella Colleoni deserve much more attention. Nevertheless, this cathedral dedicated to the saint of the city - Saint Alexander - is officially the most important since it was consecrated as a cathedral in 1697. The burial of the Saint Alexander was transferred from the church of San Vincenzo which was then cathedral of the city but then destroyed. The current construction was completed in 1693 in a baroque style in the interior and a neo-classical facade in white marble. There are a large number of chapels with among others paintings by Moroni and an imposing altar supported by six great angels. As elsewhere in Italy the baptistery is separate and is indeed placed closer to the Colleoni chapel but in a straight line opposite the cathedral. In particular, there is a modern chapel in honour of Pope John XXIII, born in a small village outside Bergamo and pope from 1958 to 1963. Entrance is free but it is closed from 12:30 to 15:00, so plan your visit. If we like the baroque style we will be satisfied!

The Duomo is the heart of the city, its spiritual center. The facade of Bergamo's main cathedral overlooks the oldest and most miniature square in the Duomo and is adjacent to the Palazzo della Ragione. It was once the site of a Roman forum, and since the 4th–5th centuries of the new era the first early Christian temple appears. Fragments of the frescoes of this early church can now be seen, thanks to archaeological excavations carried out in 2004-2012 and the Cathedral Museum established in their place. The church was originally dedicated to St. Vincenzo, but fate dictated that eventually another saint became the main patron of the city, St. Alexander of Bergam. It is his golden statue that crowns the dome of the cathedral. The temple has been rebuilt many times, so its facade is decorated in a neoclassical style, but the interior decoration of the church harmoniously combines not only classicism and baroque, but also modern decor, especially in the altar crypt of the bishops. Unique works of art adorn the cathedral: the bishop's pulpit in the altar, made in 1705 by the Bergamian carver Andrea Fantoni, the altar painting "The Execution of St. Giovanni Bishop of Bergam", by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, 1745, paintings by Andrea Previtali and Giovanni Battista Moroni, among others.

Church (cathedral) dedicated to Sant'Alessandro Martire and cathedral of Bergamo. The church is very beautiful and bright, full of frescoes in soft colors and with many gold-colored finishes. Entrance is free unlike the neighboring church (Santa Maria Maggiore).

Bergamo Cathedral - Cattedrale di Sant'Alessandro Martire - Bergamo Cathedral - old historic and large cathedral located in Piazza Duomo. The church is beautifully decorated and a must-see here. The entrance was free. It took a long time to build up to its current state.

Worth a visit is the Cathedral of Bergamo alta next to the Basilica of Santa Maggiore. Free admission and already this thing is remarkable. Baroque interior. You can take pictures. Below there is a crypt where various bishops from Bergamo are buried. In one room instead there is the statue of St. John XXIII, the good pope. I recommend you come in.

It is not often you find two beautiful churches within a hundred feet of each other, but that is what you have in Alt Bergamo. This church is not as ornately decorated as the Basilica, but it is still impressive, especially the side chapels. The magnificent exterior is especially beautiful in the early morning light.

All buildings in this area form a single architectural ensemble and are difficult to separate. When it was held for the first time, the Duomo was closed (break from 12:30 to 15), but on the way back I was lucky and even got such a bonus - the orchestra was rehearsing. Classical music flowed under the vaults, complementing the architecture. It was amazingly atmospheric. It was possible to go to the concert the next day, but having walked 20 km around this beautiful city during the day, by the evening I simply didn’t have the energy. Admission is free and the experience is guaranteed, so don't miss it.

The history of the Cathedral of Bergamo goes back to the 9th century.
The current church dates form the 17th century and is dedicated to Saint Alexander of Bergamo, patron saint of the city.
The cathedral has a Latin cross ground plan with a single nave with awesome paintings ans sculptures.
Admission is free, although a (small) donation will always be appreciated.
Nearby stands the 14th century octagonal baptistery.

beautiful baroque church, full of frescoes, altars and marbles.
Inside there is also a chapel dedicated to the Good Pope Pius XII.
Furthermore, in the crypt, a modern installation by an artist who created 12 sarcophagi symbolizing all the cardinals who succeeded one another in Bergamo.

The Duomo, or Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro Martire, has an elegant façade in neoclassical style, made of Botticino marble. Inside are paintings by Andrea Previtali, Giovan Battista Moroni and Tiepolo.
Also not to be forgotten is the Chapel of the Crucifix which houses a sixteenth-century crucifix that comes from the former Church of Santa Maria di Rosate.
To the right of the altar, there is the chapel dedicated to Pope John XXIII. The relics of the pontiff are preserved here, the coffin that housed the body of the Good Pope, his tiara and other objects including his chalice.
In an underground room, located under the presbytery, is the crypt of the Bishops, dedicated to all the bishops who have succeeded one another in the city of Bergamo. However, it is a room that I have not visited. Perhaps best visited with a guide, but still suggestive.

The Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro is the main church of the city.
Begun in the 15th century, it features a splendid high altar and the Chapel of the Holy Crucifix in baroque style.
The presbytery and the dome above are splendid, decorated with wonderful polychrome stuccoes. The presbytery is protected by a black marble balustrade.
The visit is absolutely recommended.

The cathedral is inconspicuous from the outside, a bit pressed into other buildings, f inished with beautiful white marble from the outside, it does not make a huge impression but inside it is breathtaking. Impressive interior with magnificent baroque frescoes and stucco. The one-nave St. Alexander's Cathedral reaches back to the early 6th century. It was reconstructed many times until the 19th century. Its outside appearance is neo-Classical style but the interior it's fairytale Baroque. I think it will impress not only people interested in art and architecture. On the left side of the nave a chapel with a miraculous crucifix, on the right a chapel dedicated to Pope John 23. It is worth visiting for a while and admire this amazing work of human hands in silence. At the Piazza del Duomo, next to the Basilica of Santa Maria and opposite the cathedral, you can see the historic Baptistery. Baptistery moved from the nave of the cathedral many times, finally in 1856 thanks to Virginio Muzio it stood in its present place. It is a characteristic, octagonal building with a small loggia and columns, built in 1340. On each side you can see carvings with scenes from the life of Christ by Giovanni da Campione. A must see when in Bergamo.

This must-see attraction is in the Old Town, on Piazza Duomo, near the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It’s the largest church of the city, it’s from 15. century. Inside there are many frescos and nice decoration. I liked it, but the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is more marvellous for me.

Initially we confused the Duomo with the stunning Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica. The Duomo is rather overshadowed by the adjacent Basilica but is certainly worthy of a visit. Once inside it is quite beautiful and free to enter.

These two Saints took turns as nominee, from no later than 9th century a first Cathedral was built to Saint Alexander, in 1561 Venetian demolished it for the Cathedral of Saint Vincent, finally in 1697 the Pope Innocent XI turned back the Cathedral to Sain Alexander.
The facade is attached to Palace of Reason, with neoclassical shape and beautiful portico on two levels surmounted by several statues.
Internal with Latin Cross ground plan with a single nave.
Many wonderful paintings are visible inside the chapels and at the main altar , Tiepolo , Andrea Previtali, Giovan Battista Moroni, Giovanni Cariani, Sebastiano Ricci and Carlo Innocenzo Carloni.
The Baptistery in front the Cathedral constructed in 1340 by Giovanni da Campione for the Basilica of Saint Maria Maggiore .
Octagonal plant .
Inside many bas-reliefs of episodes of life of Jesus
