The tower view of the city is great. they have an elevator but to reach the elevator you need to do a handful of steps (maybe 3 and another 3 a few steps later).
the exhibit is in Italian for the interactive displays, which look reasonably interesting but i couldn't follow. there is some written text in english but not enough to make it meaningful. maybe there was an audio guide available? maybe ask.

The attendant at the desk may not be very informative, but don't let that put you off. This is a wonderful little museum--small enough to take it all in, with sophisticated delivery of its story. Turns out you can even get a free audio guide in English, but you have to request it--the clerk won't suggest it.
The tower has a beautiful view, but it's quite a hike (take the elevator!)

It is an unmissable thing. Beautiful view. Before you go up, you need to check the time! They are ringing just above your head, so do not be scared.

The tower is located in Piazza Vecchia and you can buy a ticket for the tower only or combined with the Arhaelogical Museum.
We just went to the top of the tower and skipped the museum for 3 € per person.
Fabulous views will open before you from the top of the tower. There are also some info boards - which buildings you see at the moment in that direction. Just try to avoid being up there at a sharp hour because the bells ring every hour! To get to the top, you can either walk up the stairs or use the elevator.
Recommended!

Depending which source you read, the Campanone tower rises between 52 to 56 meters high, by no means an impossible mission to climb. If you take the narrow elevator, you arrive at one level below the campanone with just as breathtaking view as up but reaching the top, I must caution you to mind the steep and slippery stairs!!! and if you manage to get to the top without a scratch, the second caution is to anticipate the campanone to blast. You are practically under it and you can get the fit of your life when it strikes! It is very unfortunate that closing time is at 19:30 hours (clearing the tower starts at 19:00 hours) which prevents you from taking shots of the sunset (at around 20:30 during summer time). Check the visiting hours in advance, they tend to vary. Should you possess the Bergamo-Card the entrance will be free, otherwise the charge is at Eur.3.--

When you find yourself in Bergamo's main square, Piazza Vecchia, your eye is drawn to the bell tower in the corner and the beautiful, flower-lined old flight of steps going up towards it. After going up these steps I found out that the actual entrance to the clock tower is round the corner to the right, so I thought I'd save you going up the steps and then back down again for nothing by mentioning it :-) For 3 euros you can take the glass lift almost up to the top of the tower as the top floor is reached by a flight of quite narrow steps. If you want, you can climb the whole way up. The views from the bell tower are really stunning and there are boards which tell you exactly what you're looking at. Be prepared for the bell to strike as it did when I was up there at 11am. After the initial fright, it's quite thrilling.

Good value especially with a Bergamo Card.
Very good views of the city, especially if you love to look over the higgaldy piggaldy roofs of old Italian cities.
Very fast lifts, but there are still some steps so not good for those with mobility issues. One reviewer says the bell ring every hour. I think they do every 30mins. The bells themselves are beautiful copies of 14th century ones, the originals having been melted down for armaments in the war.they are certainly very loud when all three ring!
The museum next door is marvellous

Added bonus if the huge bells go off when you are at the top! The views are magnificent. Apparently on a good day you can see the Spires of Il Duomo in Milan

Old tower providing great view over the old "high" city and further. With an elevator to get to the top!
Only downside: it was quite hazy, so not too far to see...
