Remarkable Rapallo
Sep 2014
This is probably not the right section to write about Rapallo- but I thought Id start off talking about it as whole page rather than individual pages..lol This was our base when visiting the Italian Riviera, and I have to admit we were not disappointed at all with this area. There is so much to see and do yet close enough to venture to other areas. The transport system is great and was very handy as our hotel was literally 5mins walk away! The seafront is pretty striking with its pleasant palm-tree line promenade and you can get to the marina very easily. Along the seafront there are some bewildering selection of upmarket restaurants, many offering quality seafood and this is a must to eat there!- put aside your red meats/chickens and eat seafood only – this place serves the best! Also on the seafront there is a small but imposing 16th century castle, originally build to defend Rapallo against the pirates and now used as an exhibition centre. As you walk along and via the side streets you will come across other places of interest such as the churches of San Francesco, Santo Stefano, Santi Gervasio and Protasio. Which are very pleasant to view. T hey have a magnificent museum of handmade lace- yes I know what you are thinking, who cares about lace?- but trust me it’s worth a visit. They hold a rich collection of the areas famous handmade laces, the museum itself has over 1400 rare and precious laces dating from the 16th to the 20th century! One thing not to miss is the cable car which goes up to the Sanctuary of Montallegro. Apart from the visit to the church itself, the day we went there was a grand wedding which was really lovely to be part of ’Good Luck Senor and Senora!!’ The top area gives access to big views over the coast and some walks if you have the energy!
