The museum is located inside a fortress in a dominant position over the city. The collections are of great interest, in the corridor there are fossil remains found in the area, in the first room Neolithic finds and a dozen stele statues of Lunigiana. The next room displays Bronze and Iron Age materials, very interesting the grave goods of the ancient Ligurians. The route continues with materials from the Roman era, upstairs there are testimonies from the city of Luni, statues, stelae, reliefs, furnishings, objects of worship, mosaics, up to materials from the late ancient era that testify to the transformation of a Roman city until the Middle Ages. The museum has great potential but at present it appears a little neglected. Some lights on the windows of the Ligurian tombs were electrocuted, little didactic panels, almost absent upstairs, and the bookshop practically abandoned. I would add that the caretaker let me out 10 minutes before closing from the upstairs rooms without many pleasantries. This museum has the potential to be an important point of reference for those who want to learn about the archaeological history of western Liguria but at present its management does not enhance the possibilities.

Very nice Castello with great views over la Spezia. The exhibition inside was perfect. Small but very well described and with many small details. The pieces are diverse and all genuine from a proven collection

Easily accessible. Lovely place... especially the terraces, where there are lovely viewpoints. All in all I did not mind... but I expected to find things more related to the castle itself, court life and the like. Instead there is "only" one large archaeological museum... for heaven's sake, nothing to take away, but if you visit a castle you expect something to do with it. Experience all in all good.

I visited the archaeological museum housed inside the castle of San Giorgio.
Everything is very beautiful, both the museum and the wonderful views of the gulf from the castle.
However, I would like to provide some minimal suggestions:
- put a map in every room of the castle indicating I am here
- write what was done in that given room of the castle
- recover original clothes and furnishings from the castle or produce new ones
- make a map with indications of what you see outside and a reference compass
- make an introductory video on the history of the castle and the stele statues to be projected at the entrance
- write captions also in English, Chinese, Russian, Arabic
- a collection book of visitor reviews is missing
- give greater emphasis in communicating the beautiful views that can be admired
- give greater visibility with local and national TV channels

Congratulations and good work.

The medieval Castle of San Giorgio is beautiful and the museum inside is also interesting. The cost of the ticket is not high and among other things the Castle can also be reached with a comfortable lift. On the second floor, from the terrace, you can see the whole city of La Spezia. The purpose of the castle was to protect the city. Still worth seeing if you are in La Spezia.

It is worth climbing the steps or using the free elevators especially to admire the view of the city. The Manor actually doesn't seem particularly interesting except for the museums housed inside. For many years it remained abandoned and semi-ruined. The restoration has brought it back to the honor it deserves as the oldest building in the city. You can admire the crenelated walls and a beautiful tower.

One of the prominent points on top of the hill in town, this is a great place to go for some fabulous views of the surrounding area. To get in you will need to pay the admission, as this is also a museum. Within the museum, you can get some general history of the castle/fortress and the area. There are some great artifacts but most of it for us was hard to place its relevance as there is not a lot of the display boards and descriptions in English. We certainly don’t expect that, but just as an FYI to all those who do not speak Italian. There were a couple of rooms that had some cards you can grab in alternate languages but not in the entirety of the museum. It’s pretty basic but still interesting. The best part, though, is stepping onto the top ramparts and walking around to catch the views from the top. Still worth a stop for this site.

A visit to at least the castle terraces is a must if you are in la spezia. You can buy a ticket just for the views and you don't need to pay to go in to the archaeological museum which is well laid out but a bit light weight and centred on the Romans. The terrace views are fabulous especially if you like spying all the different rook gardens and the entry funicular is fun.

Well worth a visit, if you are walking there then there is an easy way to get up to the castle, from the Main Street there is a free glass door vertical lift for good views, once at the top turn left as there is another about 45deg angle glass lift in a glass encloser, this will take you right up to the castle, if you have a bike you can take this as well in the lift.
Please check the opening times of the castle as it closes early, but do not worry the lifts and the views are well worth it.

Staying in LaSpezia for 2 weeks gave us the opportunity to look around at leisure and discover some new experiences. This castle overlooking the harbour is worth the trip either up the steps (lots!) or using the lift and the funicular lift to the steps of the castle. A reasonably priced entry fee allows access to a remarkable and extremely well appointed museum of historical artifacts. Some belonging to previous owners (of long ago) up to the large exhibits from nearby Roman ruins. There were very few others here and after the tourist bun-fight of the 5Terre it was most pleasurable to wander around (in chronological order of course) the many rooms of the castle which have been converted into a museum. Several hours later a visit to he top of the castle to be greeted with spectacular views across the Bay of Poets all the way down to Portovenere. The weather was kind and the camera got a good workout. Worth the visit, if only for the views.

We’ve been to a ton of museums and castles in Europe, but we enjoyed this visit very much. We were here on a Sunday and had very little company as we toured at leisure. I could have wished that the descriptions of the many fascinating articles on display were in English as well as Italian, but stil, we enjoyed looking and being so up close to the items. It was a beautiful day on the top of the castle with amazing views of La Spezia in all directions. We were happy with what the 9.5 E got us!

This is a very pleasant fort in the middle of the town; short (easy) walk along from where the cruise shuttle bus drops you off. There are lifts that will take you to the top, so very easy to manage with small children, strollers or people with mobility limitations. There are a couple, easy to manage, stairs at the very end. The fort is fairly small, but interesting for a bit of history.

The town itself is very nice to walk through, lots of places to eat.

There are sign posts to this place from the main shopping street. Being a Sunday when we visited & most places being closed in italy, we followed the signs. There is a footpath & also a free lift up to halfway. We took the lift, at the top you cross a road & get into another fenicular type lift to the castle. It only cost a few Euros, and there are concessions. There are loads of pieces of Roman and from other ages of finds from the area. So interesting and the views from the roof are beautiful. A great way to spend a rainy Sunday & highly recommend this place if you like history.
