Very few ricket machines were operating at station leading to very long lines Lines inside main office to speak with a person were very long. Despite the public address announcements to wear a mask, there were at least half the people on board trains and in station not wearing masks. Standing room only with poor ventilation for Cinque Terre experience. Nightmarish.

It couldn't be easier to get the train from La Spezia to any of the Cinque Terre towns. La Spezia makes a great base for visiting Cinque Terre, as long as you stay near the station.
We stayed 4 nights at Hotel Mary which is directly across the road (see separate review). This was very convenient and allowed us to leave our car in hotel parking and use the trains instead each day.
Travel was simple and cheap and the train takes you right to the doorstep of each of the 5 towns.
Trains are frequent and run every 10 min in peak times. Riomaggiore, the closest of the towns, was less than 10 minutes away.
The station is not large and is therefore easy to find your way around. There is a cafe/snack shop and toilets but otherwise facilities are limited.
If you are returning to La Spezia at the end of the day, there is a lively strip of casual piazza/pasta restaurants and gelato shops between the station and Piazza Garibaldi (10-12 min walk).
TIPS:
* We bought the Cinque Terre Train card on day 1. Once we had this sorted, we didn’t have to think about tickets for the next several days. The card covers the fee for the hiking trails and unlimited train travel on the Levanto - Cinque Terre - La Spezia line. It costs €18.20 (1 day), €33 (2 days) or 47 Euro (3 days). We saved a bit but it was not much really. The huge benefit of the card was that we could jump on and off the trains without having to worry about tickets. Several times, this was a life-saver when the queues for tickets, especially at the end of the day, were enormous.

Typical small train station. Decent food options and fairly convenient to use. We were not visiting the Cinque Terre area, but the lines for that options were really long!

Of note, my husband found an ATM skimmer device inserted into the ATM machine there. I guess that's not surprising as it's a location full of US tourists. So check the ATM before you use it!

I wanted to buy a ticket at the desk (couldn’t find my destination on the machine) and the lady shouted at me cause I used contactless when her card machine was not working. So not professional.

After queueing for ages at the tourist office, in a massive crowd of people trying to use the ticket machines outside, I went inside the actual station office. I had expected that to be crowded as well, but it wasn't. They had several people at the ticket counters, so the small queue moved very quickly. Also very friendly staff who offered advice about tickets - I was buying tickets to Milan as well as day-passes for the Cinque Terre train.

Very safe, with police walking around. Lots of choices of nice food and coffee at reasonable prices. Very clean. Helpful staff.

Having called into the port here we decided to do our own thing and take ourselves to Pisa from here.

However, it is quite a walk from the port to the station which is the other side of the town and then some more.

Not a lot here, a few shops, but the nicest part is the walk along the harbour

On our return from Pisa, we found an ice cream parlour along the esplanade, where they had tables outside to sit and enjoy your ice cream..

Park in the under ground parking areas. You will take a ticket on the way in and then pay at the pay station before you get back in your car. We were parked for about 24 hours and paid around 25 euros.

Get an all day pass from the information desk which was 16 euro each and included unlimited getting on and off the trains thru the Cinque Terre region. It also includes a pass to the national park where you would do hiking and the restrooms at each of the train stations in Cinque Terre (not however at the on there in La Spezia that cost 1 euro) The bathrooms are busy and we had to stand in line but they keep them very clean.

Just like most trainstations, but they have very few places to buy tickets. When we were there there was only one person that sold tickets. And only a couple of those machines to buy from. So the lines was very long... Other than that, no big deal. After some time you will start to understand how the timesystem works and where your train arrives.

This is a small, crowded train station but it is conveniently located to rental car and historic district. Drop off area was congested and eating options limited. Enjoyed our high speed train ride to Rome
