One of the most important examples of Romanesque in the city. Of great importance is the octagonal bell tower with a double order of mullioned and trifore windows and the works contained inside the church: the beautiful Madonna delle Grazie by Nicolò da Voltri from the fourteenth century and, in a side chapel, the altarpiece by Domenico Piola dedicated to the Holy Family and the wonderful triptych by Joos van Cleve from 1515, depicting, in the center, the Adoration of the Magi. Note the particular eighteenth-century aedicule on the external side wall.

The Chiesa di San Donato is a beautiful church, especially when you are interested in Antwerp painting from the sixteenth century. In the left side chapel, the triptych with the Adoration of the Magi by Joos van Cleve (Cleves 1480/85- Antwerp, 1540/41) can be seen. The triptych was ordered by the Genoese Stefano Raggio (his portrait is included on the left wing panel; and there is an individual portrait, also painted by Joos van Cleve, in the Palazzo Spinola) around 1521 and is since the sixteenth century in Genoa. Just fantastic!

This Romanesque church is one of the finest in Genoa: the atmosphere is wonderful and mysterious. We liked it so much we went back for a second visit. There is a fabulous Flemish triptych altarpiece in a side chapel which is unmissable.

Recently,I visited this impressive church with its Romanesque Architecture, originally built in the 11th Century. In this church,I appreciated fine paintings by Barnaba Da Modena(Italian Trecento,14th Century"Madonna Nursing Christ Child"),Nicolo Da Voltri(International Gothic"Madonna of Graces"),and Joos Van Cleve(Netherlandish Renaissance,"Adoration of Magi")in this church. This church has impressive black and white columns.

Lots of artists on several floors -- plus a big talk on the uppermost floor -- the building is very impressive.

We were happy to find that the lovely interior retains its wooden ceiling and Romanesque columns. Peaceful retreat.

The church is super decorated, and very interesting. It would be a good idea to carry a hand mirror to avoid neck ache from craning to see upward.

Consecrated in 1189 and damaged several time during the ages. It was restored in 1892 and again 1946. It has kept its original appearance. The paintings inside are really beautiful and there are several notable ones included. It is in the Old Part of Genoa and worth aside trip to view it.

This little church has been standing strong during the years, and against all odds (war, fires, etc).
I remember walking around it for a while before I actually found it.
The church is really charming, a witness and also a survivor from history.
At the altar I tried to imagine relatives of mine getting married there. It was really moving.
I recommend a visit.
