You cannot visit inside the Tower but it is the oldest 'complete' Tower in Genoa I think. I read about it's history beforehand so realised its significance to the history of Genoa. It is also next to a tiny square with a tree and a seat - welcome in the midday sun after lots of 'missed turns' and uphill walking to find the Tower! I found it very beautiful and evocative of a different age - read its history beforehand for a more informed visit.

The Embriaci Tower of the twelfth century is in ashlar stone with little arches and crenellation.
It is the only survivor of the order of 1296 which imposed the reduction of the height of all the towers of Genoa to pay homage to Guglielmo Embriaco, one of the conquerors of Jerusalem in 1099.

My family and I visited Genova in March 2016, and I worked pretty hard to figure out a walking route for us on our first afternoon there! I made sure to go past the Torre degli Embriaci because something like this is worth the effort!

The Torre degli Embrìaci (even if it was actually built by the noble Castro family), is an ancient 12th century tower that rises at the top of the hill of the same name and has a stone construction with battlements (rebuilt).
Being the oldest area of the city, with its 41 meters high, it is the only one left of the numerous towers that once formed the defensive wall of the historic center.
In fact, thanks to a mayoral ordinance of 1296, it was exempted from the reduction in height. Also noteworthy is a commemorative plaque placed at the base of the tower and dating back to 1869
