Not far from Piazza Campetto, one of the most interesting (and ancient) churches in Genoa dating back to the 10th century stands in the historic center. Rebuilt in the 12th-13th century and remodeled in the 17th century, it has a late neoclassical façade, while the bell tower dates back to the 12th century.
Inside the baroque bursts with Marian frescoes by various artists (Parodi, Tagliafico, Tavarone and Piola, but there are also a Croce maior of the Tuscan school (early 14th century) and the Chapel of Nostra Signora delle Vigne, with a valuable panel ( 1397) depicting the Madonna and Child, the work of Taddeo di Bartolo.

A little squeezed into the historic center, the neoclassical façade itself does not have the breathing space it deserves in the square of the same name. Once inside you appreciate its majesty and the beauty of the decorations and frescoes on all the walls, ceilings and dome. To be seen.

This chuirch has a very old history and its decorations, paintings and sculptures inside are marvelous. It is well-mantained and possibly even more attractive than the actual Cathedral.

Santa Maria della Vigne is extremely beautiful.
It is one of the most highly decorated churches in Genoa. It's origins are in the 10th century when the monks tended grapevines in the courtyard. St. Mary of the Wine? Definitely my patron saint :))

This breathtaking basilica dates back to the 10th century and reportedly built on the then king's vineyards. Originally called "Sancta Maria in Vineis" it is now part of the Vigne neighbourhood in Genoa, one of the oldest sections in the city. This hard to find gem is worth the effort - you will be mesmerized by the sheer beauty inside. The awe inspiring ceilings shows the calibre of work of those Italian masters. Use the portable mirror to see that intricacy. Enjoy the marble relief work, statues, paintings, etchings - all are works of art. If you get a chance visit the "cloister of the canons of the vineyards" a place of peace. There are a few stories about this place, its history and traditions. If you are inspired, look them up - you will have completed your visit...

Genova has no shortage of beautiful churches in the city so this one is often overlooked and you must know where to find it. For those arriving by cruise ship, it's just a 5 minute walk from the port tourist office and well worth a visit. It looks so much smaller on the outside but it will knock your socks off when you see the lavishly decorated interior! The story of the founding of this church has to do with a young boy in a field of olive vines has a vision of the Madonna, thus the lovely dark pillar to the right hand side of the church with a picture of the Madonna, surrounded by baby bibs. It is very common for Genova residents to buy a bib and have it placed here during the first year of a baby's life; so you not only get a great church but a lovely tradition. This church has a large mirror on wheels that you can move around to see the ceiling. At Christmas time is has a large recycled wood, Christmas nativity scene. Its open the same hours of most of the churches in Genova from about 8am-1pm and 4-7; give or take a 1/2 here or there! Enjoy. Both small restaurants in the square in front of the church offer inexpensive meals, frequented by locals. If you speak Italian, and see a church volunteer, you might ask to visit the cloister.

The outside of the building and looked at special, but once you went inside, it was fantastic. This was the most fancy of all the ones we visited in Italy, so far Vatican excluded.

Stumbled across this church by accident - it was lovely inside, as is typical of the beautiful old churches of Italy. Not crowded, peaceful & a lovely surprise.
