We decided to walk back to the cruise terminal from town just to see the old port and the marina. It was an interesting walk with many sights to see but also mingling with other visitors. Good experience as a traveler in a foreign land!

Old port was great. We loved the pirate ship, and the surrounding area.
Last time we visited there was a massive market although that wasn’t there this time. Be careful of the lookie lookie men as they try and put bracelets on you and charge you. They also try and give you trinkets your hold and say you owe them money

We spent only half a day there but it was extremely nice. Several cafes with the option to sit outside even in January, ok we had a sunny day, not too much tourists, thousand things to see and to do. It was great fun!

A huge harbour full of excellent and enjoyable things to see and do. The harbour is bigger than i thought. It has an aquarium, a maritime museum, it a port full of cruise ships and super yachts. It also has some nice restaurants. I went to a very nice burger restaurant over on the far east side.

From the Ascensore Castellelto we can see the old port. Days later when we walked to the cruise ship terminal we passed by the old port to see what it was all about, there were Aguarium, a unique shaped like bubble building, a pirates ship and a crane that looks like octopuslifts, that takes tourists up for the harbor view, that was an interesting place to visit. Although we didn't have time to stay, at least we know what this place can offer. Happy Travelling!

The port area is big with plenty of seating areas. There is also plenty of shops, bars and restaurants around the area. Most people will go walking or running here. Very calm area to relax.

Nice port to visit with a few things to see and do, wouldn’t say it’s brilliant and a must but good to do.

Old Port seemed poorly designed and messy. Some good things to do like aquarium and Pirate ship to name a few but just didn’t feel right to me as someone who loves to explore the waterfront’s in all the cities I visit.

Porto Antico (port area) is mostly! a pedestrian zone, one of the most visited areas by tourists and consists of several tourist attractions, plus the departure point for boat trips and walking tours, museums, a few restaurants/shopping, cultural events/shows and currently the Tourist Information Booth (Lovingenova).

In 1992 it was inaccessible to the general public, thus redesigned by the Genoese architect Renzo Piano to revitalize the area and provide a magnet for both tourists and the Genovese. If you arrive in Genova via a cruise ship, the Tourist Information Booth (a small black kiosk near the Aquarium) would make a good starting point, as they have a wealth of information, in several languages and can help you organize your time with an excellent free map.(Be persistent, ask questions, they are not always forthcoming with information!) They also have a publication called “Locandina del Porto Antico (only in Italian) which outlines all the activities happening in the port area. On Saturdays and Sundays, starting at 10am, they offer walking tours which are excellent (12eu). Some of the main attractions within the port area are: Acquario di Genova (Aquarium- 4 stars) Bigo (the lift-1 star) Biosfera (Biosphere 1 star) Eataly (“Eat Italy” on the third floor of the Millo building with expensive food/beverage items to purchase and restaurants featuring all products from Italy. They have convenient bathrooms and you don’t need to purchase anything to use them!), La citta dei Bambini e dei ragazzi (Kids entertainment-see TA reviews) Museo Luzzati (3 stars) Galata Museo del Mare (see TA reviews) and other attractions. The NaveBus (a boat, not a “bus”) which provides a nice harbor view cruise while traveling to Pegli is also located in the port area, (it costs the same as a bus ticket, not 4.50eu as another review stated and can be purchased as you board the boat) along with several other boats going up and down the coast. Schedules are posted for the summer and winter. Check out whale/dolphin watching trips and summer firework voyages.

One word of caution, since this is a tourist magnet, it’s also where you need to be the most careful with money and valuables. There has recently been an influx of gypsies who find cleaver ways to distract you and then remove your belongings. Do not let anyone close to you or approach you with open newspapers, blankets, large, decorative weavings or in groups of kids who pretend to know you or wish to give you something. I visit Porto Antico frequently and have never had any problems, but tourists are targeted, as in any big city, so please watch your belongings and surroundings. Should you have any problems stop into the Tourist Office and they will direct you to the police station.

It’s difficult to assign a star rating to Port Antico, as it’s a collection of many attractions and your enjoyment will depend on what you decide to do. But overall for me, I enjoy walking throughout the port area, relaxing on one of the many benches, eating lunch, reading a book or attending some of the cultural events held intermittently throughout the year. I would recommend the Aquarium and the Galata Museum(see reviews)- check prices for combo, reduced rate tickets for all the port attractions. If you have any questions, I’m always happy to help-just email me. Enjoy your time in Genova.

We travelled as a group of two families with your children. The sights were wonderful but be mindful of your safety and belongings at all time. There is a network (approx 8 that we could identify) that worked together and followed us closely and monitored our every movement whilst in the area. We saw one in the group physically touch a couple and force a
Small flower into her face as a distraction whilst another moved in from behind. They are not afraid of confrontation. Another tried to force some sort of black substance into the face of the person we were travelling with. He is 6ft4 and a very large man and we had two babies and two 4yr old with us. Beware they try these tactics to steal from your person and out of your bags.
