About
The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, planned in the 1850s in an inhabited area, lies now in an area not far from the centre of Genoa. Staglieno's architectural pattern, albeit in the forms of a mature Classicism, draws on a genre that was rather common in Europe and Italy around the mid nineteenth century. However, the peculiarity and the charm of Staglieno lie in the fact that its architecture is combined with a natural layout, a type that is much more common in northern European cemeteries like, for example, the Pere Lachaise in Paris. It currently covers an area of 300.000 sqm.

I had never heard of this cemetery prior to researching a weekend trip to Genoa. WOW!!!!! A highlight of our trip! Spectacular, never-ending sculptures in every direction. A photographer's paradise. You can easily spend a couple of hours here and only see a fraction of the site.

1. I *highly* recommend a guided tour to better appreciate what you're seeing. We received information from the tourist office. (Our guide spoke Italian, but I'm sure there are English speaking ones as well.)

2. Apply bug spray before you go. The mosquitoes will eat you alive otherwise!!!

3. Most of these sculptures are in desperate need of renovation. Please look up the American Friends of Italian Monumental Sculpture (website or on FB). They are dedicated to the preservation of these works of art. I'm not associated with the group, but was inspired to help them after visiting.

My wife and I are cemetery people. We really do enjoy walking around them and seeing the different headstones, crypts, monuments and memorials. We have been all over the Europe and the U.S, but we have never seen anything quite like this one. This is a MUST SEE even if you don't enjoy cemeteries. The statues here are abundant, imaginative, amazing works of art. Some "avenues" seem to go on forever. The tributes to those lost are truly incredible and many are in great condition as they have been protected by the weather fo many years.. We drove and parked outside the front gate for free. Unfortunately, we were only able to spend a few hours here, but we will return next time in the area!

As an American living in Genoa, this is one of the top, not to be missed attractions! I really enjoy taking friends and family members to this amazing cemetery, which is so large that it has it’s own bus system. It’s easy to access, taking bus #34 from Stazione Principe and from there it’s about a 15 minute ride, usually open from 8A-4P. Ask anyone on the bus where to get off (it will be on the opposite side of the street from the cemetery) or I’m quite sure you will recognize the cemetery, as you approach. The front doors are frequently closed, but follow the flower stands around to the left and you can enter from the side where “incoming residents” are accepted. There are hundreds of monuments, sculptures, delicately carved figures with lace that resembles cloth, huge tombs with more square footage than my apartment and an endless indoor section with tomb stacked so high, two story ladders are provided to change flower arrangements. Expect to spend 2-3 hours walking among the dead, not missing the section for children, which is very close to the amazing, overgrown gothic tomb with finely decorated spires, visible from street level. If you get tired, there are “bus stops” where you can press a button and request a pick-up! Getting back to the city is easy. Follow the flower stands back out to the street where several buses stop frequently, headed for Piazza de Ferrari or Via XX Settembre.

To follow up on my review of the Staglieno, there are some new developments and exciting news for the lovers of this magnificent cemetery. I have continued to take friends and family here and they are just amazed at the wonderful sculpture; it’s the largest outdoor museum in Europe and shouldn’t be missed by art/sculpture lovers for its collection of fine Italian marble 19th/20th century sculpture ….that’s my view as a nonresident living in Genova, a city I love. I understand why several TA reviewers are dismayed at the upkeep of the cemetery and its need for restoration. Finally an American group “American Friends of Italian Monumental Sculpture” is working with Genova officials and Ministero per il Beni Culturali to restore some of the fine sculpture in Staglieno, starting with the Whitehead and Bentley memorials by Lorenzo Orengo, located near the Protestant section of Staglieno. You can view some of the amazing statues which they hope to restore on their website http://staglieno.org/Orengo-Whitehead.html ) and it will help you organize your visit, and then look for them when you visit the cemetery. It’s a very educational web site in English which will give you a better idea what to expect along with the many wonderful pictures by TA reviewers. This should really be a top attraction in Genova and its just 12 minutes away by bus from the city center.

Also since my last review the bus schedule has changed. Right now (but do check) you can get to Staglieno from Piazza de Ferrari or Via Roma (5 minute walk from Piazza de Ferrari) bus stop #34 bus, just about 12 minutes (buy a ticket at the Tobacco shops and be sure to validate it when you board). The bus #34 has the cemetery’s name on its destination display. OR Bus 12,13,14 from Stazione Brignole, stops by the cemetery, which drops you off on the opposite side of the street. There are always lots of buses returning to the city that you can pick up just outside the cemetery (on the same side) returning to Piazza de Ferrari. It’s free to visit the cemetery and it’s almost always open from 8-4, enter on the left side by the flower sellers. Bring a fully loaded camera battery, good walking shoes and if visiting in summer, water! You won’t believe how long you end up staying! There are bathrooms by the entry, but not very nice (bring TP). If you have any questions, I’m always happy to help!

I arrived on a rainy day in May, there were only 2 other people there in what is a gigantic cemetery spread over a square km, it was virtually empty of living human life, yet with the hundreds of lifesize and extremely lifelike sculptures it seems like you are walking through a frozen moment in time of the Italian 1800's captured brilliantly by the artists, you can't help but be drawn into the emotions and sadness portrayed in these magnificent pieces of art. The cemetery looks as if it has not been maintained since it was built, which adds an eerie feel to the place.
It is a bit of a physical challenge, but worth going up and down all of the levels, there is an extremely wide variety of sculptures to see.
It feels strange to say that a cemetery was the highlight of my trip but it's true, it met all the things that I look for as a tourist, a cultural and artistic experience, the emotional and fitness elements were a bonus, this was on my list of maybes, but it is an absolute must see. **Catch the Staglieno bus from Genoa station, I asked the bus driver 'how will I know when you get to the cemetery', he said 'when I switch the engine off', it's the last stop on that route, a nice 15 min ride through the hills.

My family is Genovese and my older relatives are buried here. If you are in Genova and you have time, you should really visit. The cemetary is so old. It is unfortunately in disrepair, but it adds to its charm. It can take hours to see everything. There are marble statues down endless corridors covered in years of dust. There are castle-like tombs falling apart. Make sure to see Mazzini's tomb as well as the holocaust memorial. It's very haunting. I have visited many cemetaries in the United States and Europe and I love Staglieno. I only wish that they would take care of it a bit better.

The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno was once described by Ernest Hemingway as “one of the wonders of the World.” It has often been called an open air museum due to the concentration of works by great artists and architects who worked to build the eternal resting places of Genoese and foreigners alike (from the cemetery brochure).

In 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte had issued an edict forbidding the burial of bodies inside city walls, churches and parish cemeteries for public health reasons. Subsequently, in 1832, King Carlos Alberto issued a decree that initiated the idea to build the monumental cemetery outside the city. The cemetery was finally opened to the public in 1851, although work on the cemetery was not completed until 1881.

The large cemetery covers over one square kilometre and is said to be one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. Unfortunately, it was after 4.00pm when we arrived and the gates close at 5.00pm. This meant that we could only see a small section of the cemetery. Also, being in the afternoon, the mosquitoes were out in large numbers so we couldn’t stand still without them landing on us ready to bite! It was a case of keep moving and take photos quickly along the way. I wish we’d had more time to visit so that we could have explored more of the cemetery - and I wish we'd taken insect repellent!

Unfortunately, it seems that the monuments are not maintained. They all have a thick layer of dust/dirt on them.

Definitely worth a visit - but get there early enough to be able to see the place and take some insect repellent.

I came to Genoa to see this cemetry after reading reviews. It is fantastic. So many marble statues,so realistic you can see the lacework on dresses. The work is so expressive as well.
In my book this should be number 1 on trip advisor. Its a step back in time and very Gothic.
Easy to get to - bus 34 starts from main station and works around old town.
Two words of advice:
1) You must go
2)Spray yourself with anti mosquito repellent - I got bitten loads of times. But don't let that stop you going.

Good News-Information in English Available!
I have visited Staglieno several times over the past month and throughout my time in Genova, I just keep coming back because it’s so beautiful! On all these visits I never knew that there was information available in English until just this week! The front entrance is nearly always closed, so when you arrive go towards the flower sellers and use the side” incoming” entrance. As you pass through the gates there is a nondescript small office immediately on your right. Stop in there and ask for the three brochures they have in English with detailed maps, itineraries to follow depending on your interests; Art Nouveau, Romanticism, Realism or Classicism or just to see the most famous sculptures. They also offer information about the history of Staglieno, it’s most famous sculptures and a decent map, however see the large map just beyond the entrance. The best part is just to wander where your interests lead you, but don’t miss the oldest section; it’s on you left as you enter the first mammoth arcade. Yes everywhere you look, you want to clean, clean and clean again but don’t miss the beauty! For more information about some of the restoration visit www.staglieno.com. See my other reviews for more information and pictures. This is really a wonderful and unusual “attraction” to visit while in Genova, don’t miss it!

I saw this featured on a documentary about death and art and it looked fantastic and therefore we made a point of visiting when in Liguria. We went by car and there is free parking along the edge of the cemetery (but very full - had to try a couple of circles round before we got a space). The cemetery itself is truly amazing - larger and better in real life. The hundreds of statues are superb and the scenes represented are a triumph of the Victorian glorification of death and dying. Sadly pollution has attacked most of the statues and they are blackened and I would love to see them cleaned and brought back to their former glory - now that would make it a truly spectacular sight. I loved it here, its peace and fantasy. Splendid splendid
