Church of Gesù and Saints Ambrose and Andrew
The church is located in a strategic position in the historic center of Genoa and near the Palazzo Ducale. The Baroque style emerges more inside than outside the structure where the richness of the details are enhanced. Present works by Rubens and Reni.

A small treasure chest of art!
The Church of Gesù and Saints Ambrogio and Andrea is located in via Cardinale Pietro Boetto, close to Piazza De Ferrari and the Palazzo Ducale. The church, which dates back to the late sixteenth century and was once dedicated to the name of Jesus, has a valuable interior with gilded stucco, polychrome marble, frescoes by Carlone, a splendid Assumption by Guido Reni and even two notable paintings by Rubens! One of the most interesting churches!

    SURPRISING
We enter by causality and the truth that this church impressed us how beautiful it is inside the opposite of its facade. Known as the Milanese church was built in the 7th century it was dedicated to Ambrose Bishop of Milan. It was rebuilt by the Jesuits in the 16th century. The interior represents a prestige of Genoese baroque. He has important pictorial works.

This is a gorgeous church in the heart of Genoa. The exterior may seem a bit plain, but the interior is just amazing. The alter has both paintings and statues adorning each side. Don't forget to look up. The paintings overhead are worth a neck bend as well. Look down too! The skeleton tiles are a very unique feature for a religious building. There is gold gilding, many paintings, great statues and even upper balconies. There are also 3 masterpieces here; one by Reni and two by Rubens. They alone are worth the visit. Don't miss this one!

Ths is a very large church and, as you would expect, full of glitter and fine paintings. The remarkable thing is that, to those of us more accustomed to Gothic, the proportions and the space are so well designed that the golden bits actually add a splendid icing to the whole rather than detract with too much bling. You can take as much time as you like in here looking at details but it is the overall impression which is the most overwhelming.

This is definitely worth a long visit ... no matter your religious affiliation! An active Jesuit Church, built in the Baroque era, that definitely does not disappoint in architecture, paintings( 2 by Rubens! ) and its current physical condition!

I went to mass yesterday. Very cold church and glacial atmosphere. The priest even skipped the "exchange a gesture of peace" step during mass. Which is not necessarily a handshake if we want to avoid contact for fear of illness. A nod of greeting as a sign of benevolence towards our neighbor is enough.
I didn't see "neighbors", I didn't see benevolence and never a smile, not even between them. Jesus brings joy, where I only saw sadness.

The most majestic church in the city. After the cathedral, it is the most important testimony to the magnificence of the Superba. Fantastic decorations perhaps more beautiful than those of the Roman church of the same name. Don't miss Ribens' paintings on the two main altars.

This is a beautiful and peacful church in the centerof the city and really worth a visit! Here we are surrounded by magnificent paintings by such famous artists as Reubens, Simon Vouet, Guido Reni, Andrea Pozzo. There are also many beautiful frescoes found in the cupola and ceiling. Everywhere you look this beauty beckons you, enriches you as you sit quietly absorbing it all.

The Circumcision of Christ perched above the main altar is very stricking. This masterpiece by Ruebens evokes all the pain & helplessness felt by the Madonna as she looks away with obvious sorrow at the pain being inflicted on her newly born. As is always the case with Reubens, the luminosity of his faces contrast with the depth of color in his garments, & his ability to command your attention is most impressive.

Another Reubens is St. Ignatius Heals an Obsessed. Here, it is forceful movement & power that is evoked. Then there is Simon Volute’s most striking Crucifixion. Here the radiance emanating from the figure of the dying or dead Christ is such a stark contrast to the darkness that envelops the rest of the painting.

Guido Reni's Assumption amid the Twelve Apostles is also a splendid work of art with such emotional & descriptive detail.

It was the Jesuits, upon their arrival in Genoa, who started the Church in 1589 & in 1592 the Archbishop was able to bless the base structure in the form of a Cross, but it would take another 40 years to complete the Church. The style is that of the period:
Baroque. The Jesuits maintained that the ebullience & exuberance found in the Baroque best depicted the fact that the life of a Christian is always in continuous movement. Enjoy this lovely church. Like most churches in Genova they are open in the morning 8-12 (sometime 1pm) and reopen in the afternoon 3:30-7pm. Gesu is very specific that they do not want visitors during mass services-please respect.

The outide of the church is beautiful enough to catch your attention, but stepping in will take your breath away with the magnificent frescoes and delightful architecture. Take the time to admire the details. The Baroque style inside is at its best in this monumental building

The Church of Gesu is a beautiful example of Genoese Baroque, well preserved and with some excellent art work. The church is just down the steps from the big fountain at Piazza de Ferrari in Piazza Matteotti and it's open Monday-Saturday from 8am to noon. They strongly discourage visitors during Sunday's mass. The church was originally built in the 6th century and reconstructed in the 16th century. There is a very informative marque just inside the church which explains how the two alter pieces by Rubens came to reside in the church. At the main alter, see Rubens the Circumcision and to the left in the middle of the church you can see his Miracle of St. Ignatius. Also represented is a beautiful alter piece by Guido Reni, the Assumption and don't miss the carved marble Navitity scene. This is truly a stunning church and well worth a visit.

This Church is a must to see if you are in Genoa. It was built by the Jesuit’s and the wonderful Baroque decoration is very uplifting and beautiful, with wonderful paintings and 2 incredible Rubens ,just so much to see ,I definitely want to go back as impossible to take it all in .I preferred it much more to the Cathedral /Duomo ,just below it as though magnificent was very dour in comparison ,(for me personally )
