I reccomend for foreing tourist not to to this castle: you pay 4 euro just view the landscape but the castle is closed and you can see the same landscape from many other points of Cinque Terre.
I am italian and I feel sorry for all foreign tourists who pay for nothing. They read "Castle", but the castle is entirely closed. Sometime Itally works like this. Sorry there are also honest italian people

This is a big ripoff…
You see an old tower under construction.
The cinque terre card is not accepted, so you have to pay 2 EUR for almost nothing.
The nice outlook can be enjoyed from other places as well or even better…

This “castle” is nice to see from the see when arriving by boat to Vernazza. When you eventually get up there, you have to pay a 1€50 entrance fee, not a big deal, and you arrive on a platform with a tower, you may be disappointed. The “castle”itself” is uninteresting and the view on the village is poor. Still, on the other sides you have a nice overview on the sea and the cliff. Don’t expect to much but it’s fine to climb up to this “castle”.
For a nicer overlook on Vernazza, see my other reviews on the Village, especially “La Torre”.

Not only all the views to Vernazza from this Castello are beautiful, you can also sense a Medieval character when you climb up there on the cliff on steep stairs, very narrow streets and even narrower snailshell-like stairs to the top of the main tower where two people from different directions hardly meet (but it is possible). Views to Vernazza with painted houses (in all colours) and pretty tiny harbour around and vineyards above on steep cliffs are romantic and very nice to see. I paid 1,5 € to go up there around and up to the tower. There are also some restaurants in the middle of the climb that also have very romantic views down from the cliff on the sea and village, especially on the sunset or in the night when the village glistens.

Maybe the only weakness here is that many houses in Vernazza are not good preserved or restored, so that you can see some grey cracks in the façade where it should be painted in a colour. If these houses would be restored or whole painted, Vernazza offered even better views from the Castello Doria. However, experience visiting the Castello is in spite of that surely very nice and unforgettable.

Follow the signs up the steep and narrow steps, where you'll need to buy a ticket ,( 2 euros I think). The views of the town , the coast and the mountains are ones you do not want to miss. There is a good size area at the base of the tower. where you can photos in all directions.

My husband and I made an early morning trek to the castello to enjoy the view. We encountered a very friendly cat while visiting the area as well.

If you want to get a panoramic view of Vernazza and the sea, this is where you go to! It took us around 15 minutes to walk all the way up to the castle. I have back problems, but I didn't find it particularly hard to walk up. Be sure you take the spiral staircase to go up to the top of the castle to get the best view! It's totally worth the climb! It may not be easy to find the "entrance" though. It's a set of stairs between a souvenir shop and a bar in the harbor front area. It's on your left hand side if you are facing the sea. There's a little sign on the wall.

Any castle that you can visit in italy(and there are many) I would recommend! You just cannot beat that piece of history. This is a well restored castello, and an amazing view from the top! Lovely grounds to walk around, and of course the token cat that is always on guard!

The food (inexpensive) is only exceeded by the setting. When we finished the waiter informed us they 'don't take credit cards'.
"What ? What do we do ?"
'You go see Momma.'
Momma......who is doing all of the bills with a pen paper......tells me..."No problem. You come back tomorrow. And before you leave have some desert and lemoncello'..... on the house.
Good luck finding that at home !

Entrance to the climb just opposite Baia Saraceno Pizzeria. 150+ steps up to the top but the views well worth it. So is the history and information up the top.
