The castle is at the top of a steep staircase, but it is worth the climb for the views of the village.
It was once part of a series of towers that were built along the coast to provide early warning of approaching pirates.
The cost is 1,50 Euros to go up to the castle. You can't actually go inside of the castle (at least not when we went in October 2018), but it gave you a nice and different perspective of the ocean and city of Vernazza.
