About
This compact beach has the iconic Cinque Terre cliffs as its backdrop and is loved for its pristine waters that are great for swimming. The sand is a bit pebbly—natural for beaches in this area—but there are plenty of deck chairs and umbrellas that you can rent along the private beach club areas. Otherwise, just lay out a good beach towel at the small free section of the beach—be early to snag a spot, especially on weekends and during summer. Visit this beach on your exploration of Cinque Terre—city tours often include it as a stop. – Tripadvisor

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME trying to go to Monterosso. We’ve been there twice, and both times we had awful experiences.
To go on the public beach you must reserve your time slot on the Monterosso website.
After doing that, we went to the beach but the beach was closed due to the rough sea.
This could be understandable, but they should have sent at least an email or update their website as we basically just waisted our time.

not worth it. The beach is all stones, all beaches are private around 25 euro a day. And thats only if you are lucky to find a spot. They always have a sign that says “full” eventhough 60% is empty. Apparently some people make reservation for the whole summer (lol, sure). Nice to walk around or even if youre hiking but if you come here for the beach..dont. Very disorganised. Overall i would not come for a beach holiday to cinqe terre, the best way to enjoy is....rent a private boat and go on the sea.

Depending on what part of the beach your are on makes a difference. We paid to go to a beach club down the beach away from the tunnel and the water was filled with garbage. However, the public beach portion was actually much cleaner. Go figure.

This is the worst ever summer experience I have ever had!!! Imagine a small town built for 500 inhabitants are hosting 10500 people in the summer. And each train arriving are bringing 500 more on top. There is simply no place to walk, no table to sit, no spot to sunbath. I literally could not even see the beach due to the excessive amount of flesh covering it all over. As soon as you arrive there, you will notice people walking around with desperate eyes to simply find a 0,1 cm square spot to get wet. You must avoid going there at all costs in the summertime. Be smart and go to Finale Liguria or Vernazza.

The beach stretches along the front of the town like a Riviera city. The beach is mainly stones and dirt - no white sands here. There are a ton of cafes, deck chairs, umbrellas and changing sheds all along its length ending at Il Gigante where a private club is located. When we were there the water was choppy and not a lot of good swimming options but it was sunny and warm and plenty to see around the area.

This was heaven for my Husband and I. We stayed at the neighboring village Riomaggiore. We got a spot that was right by the rock that we dreamed of while planning this trip. It was an overcast day which was perfect for the kind of day we wanted. We rented a couple of chairs and an umbrella and relaxed for hours before we ate some amazing lunch nearby and then dinner at a beautiful winery.

The water was clear and at a decent temperature. We did have to look out for jellyfishes though. There were no signs posted about them.

It seems a nice idea to spend sometime on the beach at Monterosso, so I entered the area right in the middle of the beach (the one with those Orange & green umbrellas) and paid 13euro to rent a chair and an umbrella. It was not a busy day, and there were plenty empty seats. So I thought it's nice to sit close to the sea. I was told to go for the seat in second row, so I asked does it charge differently rows ? And are the seats assigned ? The answer was "No". So I took a chair on the first row. After awhile, I was yelled by someone to move back to second row. As he said it is reserved. From my observation, over 70% of chairs are empty. I tried to explained I am only staying for an hour and willing to move if the reserved people come. But he is that kind of grumpy old man keeping pointing and yelling in italiana. I gave up, and move to the second row. But I am not convinced!

We were a family with four adults and four teens. The beach was more than we hoped and we spent two days in this Mediterranean beach heaven . We stayed in Vernazza and found the best plan to hire a boat from the Vernazza Harbor to bring us to Monterosso. We just walked to the harbor and asked the water taxi for a good price. Our guy was Nico and he brought the 8 of us over and back. We called him from our cell phone when we were ready to get picked up. We went over around 9 am and arranged for a pickup at 4. It was more expensive to take the train for the number in our family. Once we got off our boat there was a public beach but we walked through the tunnel to the better beach. Before the tunnel is the old town loaded with great shops and authentic Italian dining. We rented an umbrella and two comfortable sunbeds for 23 euros and made a deal for our kids. the rental is yours for the entire day. There is a paddle board rental for 6 euros on the beach. Because we were two families we always had one person stay with our belongings . The beach is all pebbles so water shoes help. But not necessary. The water was complete luxury and clear aqua color. There were no waves and it was relaxing and deep. We walked back to the old town for lunch and shopping and then swam and relaxed some more. While we loved every minute in Monterosso , we would again stay in Vernazza as it really had the best location and harbor front vibe.

Our trip to Cinque Terre came in the middle of our holiday. The first day we hiked in the mid-afternoon heat from Vernazza to Corniglia. It was a fair bit of work, so we decided to have a relaxing beach day on day 2. It was a quick 5-minute train ride from Vernazza to Monterosso, and the train station is in the new part of town. The beach is right there when you exit the station. We were one of the first families on the beach, so were able to rent front row chairs. We also rented a "cabin", which was basically a changing room with a lock. It was PERFECT. We could leave all of our valuables there, and just take what we needed down to the chairs. All in all I believe it was €42 for two chairs, an umbrella, and the cabin, and worth every penny. There were showers, so we were able to rinse off before the 2 hour train ride back to Florence.

The beach is indeed pebbles. Once you are out in the water, it was fine, but it was challenging getting in and out. Those neoprene water shoes would have been ideal to walk up and down the beach. I just left my flip flops by the water. The water temperature was probably in the high 70's when we were there in early September. It was very refreshing, and clear. Absolutely gorgeous.

By the time we came back from lunch the beach was crowded, but it never felt overwhelmingly busy. Highly recommend this beach with its amenities to families.

We visited Monterosso al Mare in the fall, and the water was lovely. Even in the evening, after the chairs and whatnot close up, the water is warm and swimmable. You opt for a beach chair if you'd like. I can get quite busy.
