We caught the train from Monterosso just before 7.00am. it is nearly a mile from the railway station to the start of the walk, we had already sussed this out the previous day when we explored Levanto and walked to Bonassola.
The walk is very interesting with lots of nice views and changes of terrain. Up hill for about a mile, look out for the interesting decorative B & B on the way, the path then relatively levels out for a mile with a nice woodland section, before rising again, great sea views. The summit is a mile further up. And then the descent begins, lots of high steps all the way down for about a mile, great views of Monterosso.
Great hike, well worth the effort and a lot less travelled than the 5 village routes.
We walked 5 miles (8km) elevation gain of 2061 feet took us a gentle 4 hours.
A nice mornings walk, enjoy! Highly recommend.

Fun hike on lots of different terrain, from normal paved steps, to tarmac road, forest trail, stone, ending on crazy steep steps down into Monterosso! Take a picnic, and just before the point where Wilhem Maier fell off the cliff there is a nice spot to rest on some rocks and take in the view. There is also a picnic bench in the woods but no view from there! The end if this walk down into Monterosso was a bit frustrating where the steps just go down the side of the road, annoying! End with a swim in the sea and a afternoon Spritz!

To have a walk in this wonderful nature park with a stunning view to the sea and the castle on the mountain, the coloured houses, the beach, this nice bay; this sentiero is romantic and takes a lot of time, enjoying its mild climate, and sometimes the wild wawes and soaking it all in.

I should preface everything I’m about to say with this: I’m a 55-year-old woman who goes to the gym and walks everywhere in New York City but is by no means a hiker or an athlete. With that in mind, I would call this 5-6 mile hike over the headland that separates Monterosso from Levanto challenging both up and down and rewarding in every way. My husband and I did it on an August morning in three and a half hours (with lots of shade, picture, and rest stops along the way) from the Monterosso side; we were glad for water and close-toed shoes and would have been happier had we brought something to eat up at the top because we arrived in Levanto starving. The Monterosso side starts with a lot of stairs (turn right at the north edge of town onto the street that seems to be heading east out of town rather than going straight, as that road eventually dead ends into someone’s driveway) and just keeps going up, up, and up. Some are in better shape than others and some are steeper than others. Do turn around from time to time to appreciate the views! The top does bring some relief with a small ruin (where we encountered most of the only other people we saw) and more fabulous views. The way down to Levanto goes on and on and on; just when you think you’re there, there’s another corner and a small rise. If you do go in this direction, you’ll come to the back of a small castle; go around it inland rather than taking the steps to the sea and you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful little black and white church. One piece of information we wish someone had told us: the train station where we caught the train back to Monterosso was another kilometer and then some away, tucked on the eastern edge of town as far away from the water as Levanto goes. Luckily we had had a restorative lunch by the time we discovered that fact!

Nice scenery, you pay 18 euros to do it. You must have proper foot wear as well as water. It si well worth the pain of climbing up 96 sets of stairs as my fit bit told me.
Coming down is just as bad...but the restaurants on the port provided excellent food and wine, well worth the pain!
