Together with the other surviving gates, this tower and gate is a remarkable testimony of the last and largest circle of walls, which over time have surrounded Udine (five consecutive circles). It's one of the thirteen doors that opened in the last circle. Such circle dates from the fourteenth century (but it is completed only under the rule of Venice, in the fifteenth century), and in the end - as in almost all Italian cities - is demolished, in the 19th century (especially after 1880).
Of the thirteen original gates, only four remain standing - except for error - so the historical and architectural value of this one and the other three gates is remarkable.
And in any case, its presence serves to reinforce in citizens and visitors the memory of the past aspect of Udine, which otherwise it would be even more difficult to keep alive.

The Torre di Porta Villalta is one of the few remaining parts of the former city walls of Udine. This one was part of the outermost ring, which was built in the 14th/15th century. In the 19th century, due to the growth of the city, it was demolished, so that today only a few parts can be seen.
