Surrounded by a wonderful architectural ensemble, this is the jewel in the crown of Udine! The clock tower features two Moors striking the bell, the loggia dell Lionello is a wondeful place to sit and watch the wolrd go by. The Palazzo del Commune bears simalarities to the Doge's Palace in Venice. There are statues, columns, fountains and open spaces for parading about!

While this piazza is probably the most spectacular place of the city indeed, especially due to the wonderful Venetian style city hall, I have to write more about the city as a whole and how welcoming and comfortable we found it.
If you are looking to take only one small bite of Italian sightseeing, if you are not prepared for (or are already sick of) the hassle and the tourist hordes of Venice or Rome, just come to Udine. While this city is a perfect sample of the Italian history and today's way of life -- you get to see the locals live their normal lives, taking their siesta in the piazzas --, it is not so badly infested with tourists and the tourism business as the bigger and more famous Italian cities. Highly recommended.

It's an intersection of streets, not a meeting point or a SQUARE. It's nice and it is important historically, but in less than a minute you have seen it all. There is nothing that makes headlines

nice square in the city center of Udine, with well maintained buildings. Up on the hill, there is the castle. On the square a magnificent bell tower. In the evening, the locals come here to walk around. Not to be missed !

If you like historical Venetian architecture, well maintained in a quiet context, you would like this place and its peculiar historical buildings.
It's easy to find but you've to reach it by foot; it takes only five minutes if you park in Primo Maggio Square where there are many car parks and an underground car parking.
Near this place you can also vist the old cathedral (Duomo square) and via Mercatovecchio full of shops and some bars (pubs).
Don't forget to visit:
- the "Contarena", a nice place where you can drink and eat till late and meet a lot of people (careful with prices) and
- "i Piombi" a peculiar restaurant/bar located in the underground full of young people.

We toured all the local buildings during the day and spent our evenings in the area. Enjoyed the Crunchy Cookies musical group sipping on Proseco. Lots of activity. Visited an are exhibition by Canadian artist Albert Chiarandini who was borne in Udine 100 years ago. I would highly recommend it. On until Oct 16.if shopping is ypur thing this is the area. The Piazza and Palazzos has a very comfortable friendly feeling. A great spot.

With statues, columns, a piazza and a soaring hill behind, della Liberta is the best view Udine has to offer. And until October 18th, an art exhibit graces the Palazzo D'Aronco on the piazza in the Salone del Popolo. Because we are Canadians, we were very interested in the works of Albert Chiarandini who was born in Udine but immigrated to Canada as a young man, becoming a celebrated portrait and landscape artist in Canada. But you do not need to be Canadian to be awed by his vision. For his centenary, his works on on display here as the artist returns to his homeland to share the beauty of his adopted land, Canada. Take some time to take in the Piazza, then enjoy the art of Chiarandini.

We visited Udine and the Piazza almost by chance .A typical nowhere town, a bit rundown ( not dirty to be honest ), this piazza is a 5 mins visit but funny enough the locals are masters in lousy customer service.Waiters take for ever for a plain dish ,barmen look at you like if they were the ones to be served ,etc ,etc.Prices are high in terms of value but above all we found that we could get little after 100 pm on weekends :no bar,no restaurant ,no supermarket ,not to speak after 800 pm weekdays. To be fair ,we are used to a complicated urbanite life where dining 200 am is not weird and shopping 900 pm is frequent. So ,skip iyt if u can.
