We stepped into the Chiesa di San Nicolò while wandering along the main boulevard In Trieste, the Riva Tre Novembre. We had not read the name plate at the entrance so to our surprise the church turned out to be Greek Orthodox. It is a very pleasant church with religious art, completely different from the standard Catholic Church in Italy. As a picture tells more than a thousand words, I have added some. A visit to this church is to be recommended.

This is a Greek Ortodox church. When you enter you muist look up and so you will see a joyfull face of a young man: GOD himself in this unique portrait! A Joung smiling kid!! Lovely solution. Then you will meet 2 little columns: the limit of the non babtized, thei are the Hercules Columns as they devide the church in 2 parts: the non babtized and the babtized that can enter the church also after the gospel while the others must exit as they cannot assist to the consacration.

A place of worship, it currently houses internal scaffolding. There are some chairs at the back where you can sit to listen to the audio guide which is downloaded with qrcode at the entrance. Very decorated interior with characteristic atmosphere. Worth a stop

…a few centuries ago the Greeks who were among the first large communities to arrive in Trieste…founded their Church!!…in order to meet and create a meeting point for different cultures…the Eastern Greek Community was established!!… and then the Greek Orthodox Church of the city was founded!!…it is the Church of San Nicolò!!…patron saint of sailors!!…of shipowners and of all those who work for the sea!!…also for this reason it appears near the sea!!…but I only saw this Church dedicated to San Nicolò dei Greci in Trieste from the outside!!…

A calm, cool space, for reflection and an escape from the heat. Excellent example of an Orthodox cathedral. Well worth a visit - just check opening times:

The church is rich in gold and detailed paintings - breathtaking at first look. The attached museum is full of icons and portraits and well worth a look around.

It is a classic example of Greek churches, maybe a little more lavish than the ones in Greece. However, the Greek community in Trieste is rather large and wealthy and on the same time, very religious, so it is very common, contributing for temples' maintenance..

Just like the Serbian orthodox church this has a lot of gilding. It is a little puzzling that the Greek orthodox church here should be so wealthy but it clearly is.
