Like many orthodox churches this is an ethereal jewel box with amazing gilded iconostasis. This literally glows in the surrounding Byzantine gloom. I find these places very atmospheric and when we were there prayers were being said which added to the quiet deeply evocative sense of mystery. It’s a nice church well worth a visit

This large and important Serbian Orthodox Church witness the existence of a large community of Serbs in Trieste through history. Apart from religious reasons cause for the tour can be architecture as well as Serbian culture and language. What is important for our family is large outdoor fresco Basil the Great, patron of our family.

San Spiridione Serbian Orthodox is an incredibly beautiful Neo-Byzantine building of grey stone, twin towers and huge central dome. Two mosaic panels of saints stand guard over the entry with its shimmering mosaic of the Madonna and Child. The interior is spectacular. The central dome is richly decorated with mosaics. Natural light falls from its deeply recessed windows. Four giant candlesticks, taller than a man each holding three pure white candles at least two metres tall glow before the elaborate screen of shimmering gold and silver. An avenue of similar candlestands flank the central aisle. The floor is a geometric pattern of large chunks of different coloured marble. There are no pews , the central area is completely open. But we are so fortunate to arrive after 6:00p.m. as three voices fill the entire space with live music, an amazing chant. The black robed priest stands to one side with a man and a young woman facing the elaborate screen. It is spellbinding. What an unbelievable experience.

Spending a day in the City and having reached the Grand Canal area we were lucky to be able to visit this Church which is open in the mornings between 0900 and midday. There is a large central Dome and four Bell Towers and the whole interior is decorated in a glorious Byzantine style. With lights reflected in the mosaics and icons giving a truly sumptuous feel, it makes for an uplifting visit and is strongly recommended.

The Saint Spyridon Church is the Serbian Orthodox Church in Trieste.
It's located near to Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia (the unique real Place in the city) and the Ponte Rosso, the district in which a channel was realized in the XVIII th Century to allow boats coming from outside Regions and Countries to deliver goods (like water melons, flowers, clothes and many other raw materials) directly to merchants, with no risks in case of heavy sea.

It’s a beautiful imposing church, which encloses numerous religious icons and confirming the complexity of the city, in which in the past were living together without any problems different religious communities, due to the particular position Trieste had inside the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

You will not regret the hour you will spend in visiting this superb and sumptuous building.

I really don’t recommend this church. Simply due to the staff, they are disrespectful and impolite. I was wearing a normal T-shirt and shorts and was told to leave the church and asked if I wasn’t scared of god?
They are unjustifiably strict and extremely impolite.
