In May we attended a beautiful performance of the "Giselle" at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste. We chose two seats in the first rows of the audience that allowed us to appreciate not only the structure of the theater and the good acoustics, but also the skill of the dancers and the good level of the orchestra. Trieste is a city with a rich musical tradition and shows never disappoint.

An architectonic landmark, even if one is not going to a performance, is the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi by the coastal street 3 Novembre. The neoclassical façade with an arched portico was built by the architect Matteo Pentsch (from Lake Constance), with influences of the Scala di Milano, while the interior was made after plans by the Friulian architect Gian Antonio Selva, whose main work is the opera house La Fenice in Venice.

The place was first opened as Teatro Nuovo in 1801, became Teatro Grande in 1821, the Teatro Comunale in 1861 and finally in 1901 the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, the year of the composer's death.

I was with my wife and friends at Teatro Verdi. The Theatre, founded in 1801, is what beautiful Trieste deserves. Large cavea, not small orchestra hole, vast stage. Beautiful theater. Staff, consisting mainly of young Hostesses, welcoming and helpful.

We attended an opera. Enjoyed the theater and the orchestra. We had a limited view of the stage. We bought tickets ahead of time from an agent and our seats at 44 euros each had a very obstructed view which spoiled our evening.

We came here for the rarely performed opera Andrea Chenier in cooperation with the opera company from Maribor in neighboring Slovenia. This vintage opera house is a gem that dates from the Austrian Hungarian empire. Ticket buying tip: many of the nosebleed seats have obstructed views. Titles were in both English and Italian, but our obstructed view made it hard to see them. Otherwise great and a must-do for opera fans.

It is not surprising that this resembles La Scala as it is built by the same architect, and furnished in red and gold. You can tour part of the theatre on a formal tour, but we chose to buy tickets to the opera (very reasonable prices), so saw everyone dressed up in their finery. If you can go to something here one evening, then do!

Highlight of my trip! The Opera House is stunning and a fantastic performance of Puccini's Tosca. Lovely to hear a full orchestra and fabulous voices.

We were lucky enough to get tickets for Donizetti's "l'elisir d'amore" and it was a most enjoyable evening in this classic five tier opera house. The staging was perfect, the singing too and the orchestra rang out the foot-stamping melodies one after the other. The lead soprano was Ukrainian, the conductor Slovenian so that it was a perfect cast for this multi-ethnic city.

When we travel we always endeavour to attend a performance. Unfortunately there were no operas in the Verdi Theatre during our time in Trieste. We booked for a 6pm orchestral concert on the Saturday. We got the tickets the previous Thursday and chose very good seats in the centre of the parterre.

The Theatre is exceedingly ornate and surprisingly large with a capacity of about 1400. Thankfully it was fully air conditioned so very pleasant setting. Especially as the temperature that day was about 30C !

The concert consisted of Mozart and Brahms pieces performed by the resident orchestra. It lasted about 70 minutes and we very much enjoyed it.

One of the iconic views from the sea. Dedicated to Verdi and now working as a theatre. Nice architecture
