We loved the trip up the mountain on this historic tramway. The views of the city, the bay and the villages on the way were stunning. At the top we choose to explore the locale, found some interesting shops and a wonderful chocolatier. We bought a selection of superb chocolates which we enjoyed while sitting outside in the sun.

I was so looking forward to taking this historic tram from Trieste to Opicina. However there was a front-end collision between two trams in August 2016, and there is no telling when tram service will be restored. The only options now are a bus which runs along a less steep route or a taxi. I hope the tram service is... More

If you want to visit Opicina this is the best way to travel. The traditional tram offers a slow but steady climb of the steep tracks up the hill while offering a splendid panoramic view of the gulf of Trieste and the city. The tram itself is wonderful, with its wooden chairs and antique atmosphere.

The review only gets 4 out of 5 because the Tram wasn't operational on the day we visited ( Sept 2016) . However this lead to a great discovery , a nice and easy walk of about 5KM to Prosecco via the Strada Napoleonic, with a lot of stunning views on the way ( as well as double meaning references... During his decade living and writing in Trieste, this was one of his favorite activities. And a charming way to spend part of a day, heading up to the Obelisk and the The Strada Vicentina (Strada Napoleonica) for broad gravel walking paths high above the city with spectacular views of the coastline. One gets off the trolley/funicular at Obelisk for... More

One of the reasons we chose to Trieste via train was to ride this historical tram but it was out of order. Disappointment!! But I can guess that the ride would have been scenic as we take the bus which was also going through a way with good view. A few information for future travelers: When you get down at... More

This is a very inexpensive way to get great views from above Trieste. There is a walk at the next to the last stop (at the obelisk) that we decided not to do since two members of our party weren't up to a long walk. However, it looked like it would be very nice. You can get lunch in the... More

Great fun, kids would love this, view spectacular, certainly worth the time. Found it not at all crowded but we were there mid week.

It links Piazza Oberdan, on the northern edge of the city center, with the village of Villa Opicina in the hills above. The longer upper section, from Vetta Scorcola to Villa Opicina, is mostly on roadside reservation or private right-of-way in open rural country.

What better way to travel than a historic tram? With the price of a regular bus ticket you can experience a historical tram and be taken from the blue waves of the Adriatic Sea to the fresh air of the Triestin Karst plateau!
