Besides the CittĂ veccia, the old town with its narrow winding alleys, most tourists in Trieste will also spend time in the adjoining Borgo Teresiano with its rectangular street layout. At its centre is the Canal Grande, and especially south of here several streets - as in the old town - have been pedestrianised. Today it is one of the favourite parts to go shopping. Quite a few will also have their accommodation here, as we did.

When Trieste was declared a free port by the Austrian emperor Charles VI there was such an economic boom and a rapid population growth that by the orders of his daughter Empress Maria Teresia the salt pans to the north of the town were drained in the mid-18th century and a new quarter built, which for a long time then was called the CittĂ  Nuova (new town).

The Borgo Teresiano is delimited by the Via Ghega near the railway station in the north, the Corso Italia to the south, the sea to the west and the Via Carducci to the east. Most people, who first settled here, were immigrant merchants and businessmen, who often made a fortune here and had palaces built for themselves: Palazzo Carciotti and Palazzo ScaramangĂ  belonged to Greek merchants, while the Palazzo Gopcevich by the Canal Grande was the home of a Serbian banker.
