A nice quiet square in the heart of Ravenna, but it is also a meeting point that unites the streets of the historic center and which often hosts events and shows. It is surrounded by beautiful palaces and historic buildings. Bordered by the town hall and the Baroque church, Piazza del Popolo is the main square of Ravenna. Its rich history is seen and felt at every turn. The Piazza del Popolo was built by the Venetians as the core of the renewal process carried out under the dominance of the Serenissima in the city of Ravenna. Following the example of Piazza Saint Mark in Venice, in 1483 two columns were erected on the square. The Saint Mark's Lion was placed on the top of the column next to the palace, while on the other stood the statue of Saint Apollinaris, patron saint of the city. In the square we find: the Palazzo Merlato, which was built during the fourteenth century where in ancient times the Da Polenta family resided. On the south side of the square we find the Rector of Romagna's palace built in 1295, later it became the Apostolic Palace and the seat of the Legate of Romagna. Along the perimeter of the square we also find the Palazzo dei Rasponi del Sale, the current headquarters of the Unicredit bank. An interesting building with Public clock (Orologio pubblico) is also on the square. During our stay we were able to attend performances by Ukrainian musicians and dancers. Nice atmosphere.

This large plaza built by the Venetians in the late 15th century features two columns - one has a statue of Apollinaris and the other a statue of Saint Vitalis. Palazetto Veneziana is a small palace behind the two columns. The plaza also has the city hall, shops, restaurants, a palace that now is a bank, and an 18th century church.

The central square of the city. Quite long and thin. Some beautiful archetecture around, but I've seen better squares. Worth paying through definitely, but don't plan to spend too much time here!

This not-so-large square is lined with beautiful old buildings. There are plenty of cafes and shops. The entire square is a pedestrian zone, so there are no cars and one can walk around and enjoy the beautiful architecture.

This is a charming square that you will probably come to know well if you are staying a few days in the city. There are a number of restaurants and it is full of life.

Lovely outdoor plaza perfect for taking refreshment, browsing in stores, or simply revel in the sunshine and admire the passing parade. Slow down and take it all in.....

For us Ravenna is really cute city. You can "smell" history all over the place. We were also suprised with smaller number of tourists, comparing with Verona or Venice. Maybe that's why this city is very clean :) I think that people maybe don't pay enough attention on Ravenna. The city have great and very rich history behind it, very well preserved monuments, so there is no reason to avoid this city. Piazza itself is cute, peaceful, you can stop by, eat something or drink coffee.

The centre of Ravenna is beautiful and this square is no exception.

A good place to pause and people-watch and plan your next adventure in the labyrinthine streets.

We arrived by train into Ravenna and by walking out of the station we came to this beautiful square. It is surrounding by some interesting historical buildings, as well as the usual selection of bars and restaurants. On the western side of the square there is the Palazzo del Comune with an arcade at ground level, Palazzetto Venezione on the south side againwith a wide arcade below the building built by the Venetians, the Prefettura, Palazzo Rasponi del Sale and the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro building with the public clock. The city tower is visible from the square and is 39 metres high.
