We went to this museum after seeing the main basilicas and thought it would have been useful to to go at the beginning of a trip, as the displays set the art of mosaic into context. Nicely situated in an old church, with a mock-up of a workshop, and a good display of modern mosaics in the gallery. Entry is part of the Ravenna pass, which is good value.

Perhaps a little sparse inside and some displays of little interest -many replica's but at least they saved a trip to Rome! Dante anniversary mosaic display was gruesome with much inferno and little paradise.

The museum provided a good overview of the restoration of mosaics. It had copies of some of the mosaics from other buildings around Ravenna. There was also a video that showed the restoration process. Most signage was provided in English. There was also a section with current day mosaics adjoining to the main structure that was interesting.

Located in a church, this great museum contains fantastic old mosaics displays and lots of interesting explanations on how they are created. At the time of my visit, there were also beautiful contemporary mosaics. Well worth a visit.

It's a collection of copies, pictures of mosaics, and contemporary art. Contains some tools and samples of tesseras as well.
Nothing worth of visiting if you have average education.
Might be interesting for children.

I wish there was a little more in the way of English translation but it was fascinating. The collection of the 1960’s works themed on Dante’s work was an added bonus

You can't miss this museum when visiting Ravenna if you love mosaics. It's got a lot of information about mosaics and their history.
It wasn't really a museum for me because I went to a lot of places where they had/have mosaics in Ravenna. Once you've seen a few of those places it's easy to get bored by them.
Try to visit this museum before going to the churches where they have a lot of mosaics, like the Basilica di San Vitale and others.

An ancient church converted into a museum. A new life! Great restoration of the structures, of the paintings. A well planned iter inside to introduce the history of the mosaic all over the word. A diachronic vision, a syoptic panorama!
A special thank to all the Collegaues who have been working with me to creat this cultural excellence!

this was a great find - I have a particular interest in mosaics and their history, and the exhibits showing the development of the art were of great interest. it was possible to take photographs, so I now have a reference library to work from. Tamo was housing a smalll exhibition on the Ottonians which I was really pleased to find.

Excellent display of history of mosaics with examples of classical and modern mosaics. Very well laid out in a beautiful setting. Some original frescoes can be seen on the church walls. More information on the actual technique and production of the mosaics and terrasae would have been useful
