The current baroque building replaced the former 5th century Basilica Ursiana. What remains of the former Basilica is currently at the Archiepiscopal Museum.

The current church is not beautiful. There are a few side chapels worth noticing, such as the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament (with a paining by Guido Reni, "Moses and the Gathering of Manna in the Desert", 1614-1616), and the Chapel of Our Lady of Sweat (with an image believed to be miraculous, as it would have sweated blood twice).

Truth to tell this is an unexceptional baroque duomo, and is made even less appealing in a comparative sense given the superb earlier ecclesiastical buildings in Ravenna with their legendary mosaics. Obviously it would be impolite not to stick your head in the door, but if you've been in other such buildings you'll be fairly underwhelmed. Move on to the delightful Neonnian Baptistry and the interesting Museo Arcivescovile next door.

A beautiful cathedral- we were visiting with a local friend and not only did her parents get married in there, but she got christened in there too!

Please note- just near the cathedral is a small but lovely little botanical garden, really worth a visit if you are passing.

This is a very large building next to a museum of modern art.
Worth wandering inside the church if you have the time.

In Ravenna it is very difficult to find a place which is comparable with the marvellous mosaics. But still the Duomo is pretty full with nice art work.

It depends on your appetite for churches. This is a fine cathedral, but is out-classed by the history and mosaics in others in Ravenna. This is a millennium later than the most of the others!

Ravenna is a beautiful place to visit... after Florence and San Gimignano, one of our favorite places in Italy. Yet you wouldn't ever bother to visit the Duomo if you weren't here for San Vitale or Dante or the Battistero... The Duomo is just not that interesting a building for Italy. There are better churches everywhere. It's really not worth your time. Much more interesting places to see in Ravenna.

Not part of the combination ticket but free to enter and as it is adjacent to the Battistero Neoniano and the Museo Arcivescovile (which are) is is easy to go round into Piazza Duomo.
As duomi go, it is average and a not particularly noteworthy 18th Century building in basilica style, replacing an earlier cathedral. There are some nice interior chapel frescos.

While here we went to see the Duomo. It's open in the morning then again in the afternoon. Worth visiting while in Ravenna.
