Theodoric the Great was king of the Ostrogoths from 475 to 526 AD, and from 511 he controlled also the Visigothic Kingdom. In 526 AD he died in Ravenna , the capital of his reign, and he was interred in Ravenna in the mausoleum bearing his name, but his bones were later scattered and his mausoleum was converted to a church after 540 AD.
The mausoleum is made of Istrian stone, and its roof consists of a single carved stone 10 metres (33 ft) in diameter weighing 230 tonnes.
There are two rooms in the mausoleum:
- a lower room, totally bare;
- an upper room, with a few traces of frescoes and a large Roman porphyry tub, that served as a sarcophagus for king Theodoric.
The mausoleum was inscribed with seven other "Early Christian Monuments and Mosaics of Ravenna" buildings as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
There is a cumulative and cheaper ticket, allowing to visit Theodoric's Mausoleum, the National Museum, and the Basilica of Saint Apollinaris in Classe.

The Mausoleum of Theodoric is one seven early Christian monuments and mosaics of Ravenna inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The mausoleum is a single building with a decagonal shape, constructed as two levels, one above the other. The tomb of Theodoric was originally kept in the mausoleum, but was removed after the Byzantine reconquest of Ravenna. The porphyry sarcophagus of Theodoric is on exhibit on the upper floor though. The rest of the mausoleum is bereft of decorations. The mausoleum is also interesting because of the use of opus quadratum construction technique where precisely cut stones are locked together without the use of mortar. To be honest, there's not a lot to see and you'll likely spend more time watching the introductory video in the reception.

This funerary construction of the Ostrogoths which dates back to 520 AD is part of the UNESCO heritage. It is located a little away from the historic center. More beautiful to see and admire it from the outside. Inside there isn't much to see, just a red porphyry tub.

Mausoleum is truly impressive. Entirely made of stone blocks. It is divided into two overlapping rooms. The lower room with a Greek cross plan is empty and was probably intended as a place of worship. the centrally planned upper room has a porphyry basin in the center in which, according to tradition, Theodoric's body was placed.

We spent the entire day before touring Ravenna with a guide. The only way to really see & understand what you are seeing with with a guide. We used Sandro Farinelli+ 39 348 0077786. He has guided us in several cities in Italy and is FANTASTIC. He guides in Italian, English & Spanish & we can't recommend him highly enough.

Definitely, worth a visit. Maybe overshadowed by Ravenna's mosaics, this magnificent monument was once by the seashore...! The lady at the Tourist Info Office near by was very nice and helpful, listened and offered options. Near by are the remains of a magnificent fortress (Rocca Brancaleone). All within walking distance from the city center...!

We walked from our lodging at city center on a hot day. Fortunately, the monument is in a pleasant park, with shaded benches so catch your breath. We particularly enjoyed seeing the repurposed Roman porphyry tub in which this Ostrogothic king was once buried. Very cool.

When you're planning a trip to Ravenna you'll probably see a brochure with a picture of Theodoric's Mausoleum. It looks much more impressive in photos than in real life.
That's not to say, 'Don't go'. Just don't go out of your way to see it. Don't pay 3 Euros to go inside - there's nothing left to see except part of a marble sarcophagus.
The Mausoleum is about a mile out of way of the main attractions. If you have driven into the town, there is a nearby car park. You could stop and see it from a distance which really is good enough.
Stick to the mosaics in Ravenna and you won't be disappointed.

It's impossible not to notice the Mausoleum of Teodorico: it stands tall and white, all alone in a green park.
Differently from the other mausoleums in Ravenna it's not built in bricks but entirely in Istria stone.
From afar it looks like a cylinder, and it's monobloc dome of 230 tons (I remark: 230 tons!!) helps this image: its dome really seems a perfectly fitted crown.
Instead of mosaics or sparkling decorations there are lots of symbols : the 12 sides of the building, the 12 "teeths" of the dome, the simple white seashells.
But the real star is the red sarcophagus: even if it's not sure it was the real sarcophagus of Teodorico, it is so regal that it would have deserved such a great honor.

The mausoleum has been preserved in a large, contemplative garden which is so appropriate for such a beautiful and magnificent structure. It costs 4 euros for an adult to enter, though I'm sure lots wander in without paying as the ticket office is past the entrance and there are no staff at the actual mausoleum grounds. We scowled very hard at those who tried this while we were there - paying to help preserve important historic sights like this is the least tourists can do in my opinion. A trip to Ravenna would be incomplete without a visit to Theodoric's Mausoleum
