This small garden near the Duomo was one of our favourite places on our visit to Ravenna.
Full of interesting plants and flowers it is like a mini botanic garden- quite a few of the things I saw were new to me. It is a peaceful spot just to sit and enjoy the day.
Completely free to visit- it just might be a little difficult to find if you don't go with a local.

We found this little herb garden near the Piazza del Popolo quite by accident. It is a wonderfully cared for herb garden that is a great place to sit down and rest for a while if you are walking around Ravenna. There is no fee to enter and it is a shady and quiet place to just take a break in.

Found this by chance and so pleased we did. An Oasis away from the crowds and heat. Worth spending half an hour relaxing.

This is a lovely small garden packed with medicinal plants, some you would not think would be more than a pretty plant. All the items have Latin names and their properties. Very interesting and the plants have a lovely aroma. Particularly liked seeing the pomegranate trees with the fruit hanging from the branches.

Before even entering the gate, I was greeted by the wonderful aroma of rosemary. This little garden is packed with botanical specimen, all labeled with their common (Italian) and Latin names, and their uses. As a keeper corrected me, this is not just a "garden" (giardino) but an "orto botanico".

Entry to the gardens was not very expensive and although it is not an extensive site, I think it was worth a visit. The garden is very pretty with a lovely fountain and the terraces climb until you are looking out over the Piazza San Francesco below. There a fragment of mosaic pavement in the crypt and there was some modern art on display (some better than others). Ravenna was not especially busy on the day we were there but it was still nice to have this place completely to ourselves for half an hour or so.

Renovated crypt with small area of floor mosaic. The garden and roof terraces are the sight to see here, which are very quiet contemplative areas to sit and view the bell tower of the nearby Basilica

This lovely garden specializes in herbs and useful plants. It is a great place to slow down and rest a while before hitting another church.

A wonderful oasis in the heart of Ravenna near the cathedral. I spent time here relaxing, reading my kindle between looking at the more obvious sites. The garden is laid out in 4 sections planted with herbs and other fragrant plants, with a fountain in the centre. I think the music came from a shop where it looked as if you could have facials and massages etc.The gates were locked at 12.30. I assumed it opened again later in the afternoon.
