About
The Mosaic Art School, near the Basilica di Sant-Apollinare Nuovo, offers courses in the art of mosaic. There is an introductory five day course where you make two projects, one a copy of a Roman/Byzantine mosaic and one a contemporary piece. Once you have mastered this, there are classes in mosaic Portraiture, Carpet-Floor mosaic technique, 3-D mosaics, micro-mosaics, and mosaic restoration. Luciana Notturni -- mosaic artist, instructor, lecturer and acclaimed mosaic art restorer -- oversees the courses taught at the school. The classes are held in English.

Far surpassed my expectationThe school is situated in central Ravenna. Easy to find. Excellent tuition. Small group allows plenty of one to one instruction. Tutors kind and helpful. Fabulous assortment of materials. Excellent tour of ancient mosaics too!Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 16, 2023

- Miriam S1 contributionI Loved This Course!I absolutely love this course! I've been making self-taught mosaics for years, but I learned so much from Luciana and the team. They are consummate artists and craftspeople, and wonderful teachers, warm, encouraging and clear. The class was well-organized and well thought out to enable us to finish two mosaics in one week, and the setting in Ravenna was inspiring. Can't wait to take another course with Luciana and the Mosaic Art School.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 3, 2023
- Pilot84Australia73 contributionsA lovely workshopThe workshop attached to Luciana’s home is beautiful - it is decades of history just in those few walls. I was fortunate to book a 1:1 class with her last-minute with little notice. I had fallen in love with mosaics only a few weeks earlier, after seeing the Palatine chapel in Palermo and then to Pompeii and missed all the group classes before I left Italy. She and her team were extremely talented, knowledgeable and accomodating. I felt a new part of creativity within me had been unlocked and I had an experience which I will take away for the rest of my life.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten December 30, 2023
- Sherpa487697338141 contributionAn enriching experience!I had a wonderful learning experience with Luciana Notturni. I feel I am lucky to be able to spend a day with her in her studio and gain so many insights of this artform. I enjoyed the many conversations and her mosaics and of course the piadina! I wish I could stay longer but that is a reason to plan another trip to Ravenna! Luciana also guided me to visit nearby locations to enjoy the ancient mosaics as well as modern mosaics. I am so happy to have planned this trip and looking forward to complete my piece back home.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten January 14, 2024

If you like any type of artcraft this course is a wonderful way to get away from home, grab your best friend, and experience a bit of history, art, wonderful Italian cuisine, and test your patience with making extraordinary pieces of art. Luciana and her staff makes you feel welcome opening her studio to students from all over the world. I am already planning to come back.

I highly recommend any of the workshops offered
by Luciana Notturni at her school in lovely Ravenna. You’re provided an opportunity to learn both the context of the art of mosaic, when and by whom these ancient techniques were developed and where the art of mosaic fits in as an important medium historically and today, and you learn the traditions of the mosaicist and techniques she uses to create art anew or copy some of the ancient designs. Ravenna is the mosaic capital of the world.
In my five-day course, held 9AM - 4PM, I learned new skills and met other students from Dominican Republic, Belgium, West Bank, London, and Edinburgh! We had a ball!
Luciana and her incredibly talented staff practice the traditions of an ancient art form and they are an important piece of the core of Italy’s national heritage. I plan to return to take other workshops in the near future.

I just completed a week with Luciana and her team focused on floor mosaics of antiquity. Exceptional experience. Luciana and team are knowledgeable, warm and engaging team. They led me thru the processes of how to make floor mosaics that included how to plan, design, organize and make floor mosaics. They also introduced me to suppliers of tools and raw material. All of this came together to allow me to start making floor mosaics for myself. Highly recommend to anyone interested in mosaics.
I also enjoyed the city of Ravenna. Great restaurants and coffee shops and historic mosaics to see.

The experience in the workshop of 5 days - general course with Luciana and professional team was so intense and deep that gave me the feeling of gaining the keys of certain profession, which people usually have to study for long time at universities. I’m very grateful that my inner love for mozaics brought me to exactly this school, because before that i spent 6 months in Barcelona - the city of mosaic to say, but didn't meet there anything similar to this.

It was absolutely a great experience taking this class with Luciana and her studio team. An added benefit that can't be overstated is that the course takes place at her studio in Ravenna, the home of 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites due to their early Christian architecture and mosaics. So, if you are a fan of early Christian art and specifically mosaics, you are at the epicenter! But, not only early mosaics, there is currently a fantastic exhibition of modern mosaic work, including Luciana's, at the Museo d'Arte della cittĂ di Ravenna only steps from the studio. The course was fast-paced, at times intense work, which is exactly what I was looking for. I left with an excellent grounding in both the "Ravenna" method of mosaic production as well as the "Direct" method, work which I want to introduce into my own studio work. Looking forward to my next class there!

I loved my time at the Mosaic Art School!! This was my second class within 3 years. I would have been back sooner if not for COVID. Luciana and her staff were very professional and I learned so much. I took the Portraiture Class and learned more about skin tones and shadowing. Thanks to everyone at MAS!
